Chapter 2
I smiled sitting in my room waiting for him. Vanshika Aunty was coming over today with Jeevika Didi and Virat. Uncle was out of town for a conference and Mom offered for Aunty to join us since papa had gone with him. My heartbeats grew fast as I heard the doorbell ring. "do I look ok," I asked myself I checked the mirror one last time. I had on a purple anarkali that I recently bought. I had came to India with one pair of jeans and a t-shirt which I ended up wearing last time we went over to Vanshika Aunty's house. I finally had a chance to go shopping and bought myself some kurtas to last my stay in India. I grew up in the US but I still loved the Indian dresses and refused to bring anything to India so that I could fill it with all the stuff I buy; unfortunately or fortunately, my mom caught on and forced me to bring the pair of jeans just in case I didn't have time to go shopping and we needed to go out.
"Darwasa khol Manvi, kya kar rehe hai!,"I heard my mom shouting from the bathroom and blushed, I was thinking about how I was looking and completely forgot that my mom was taking a shower. Poor Vanshika Aunty, Virat and Jeevika Di must be confused. I ran down to open the door when I just saw Vanshika Aunty and Jeevika Di standing there waiting for me. I let them in and tried to slyly look around for him when Jeevika Di caught me, "he's coming with Virenji Manvi, it will be a little bit," she said smiling. I felt the blood rushing to my cheeks once again. "oh nahi that's fine, I just wanted to make sure before I closed the door," I said nervously thanking god Vanshika Aunty had already settled herself in the living room. I had decided I would cook tonight and began dinner when Aunty noticed me walking towards the kitchen. "Kadambari, aaj manvi khana bana rehe hai?" she asked surprised. My mom just smiled, "subha se zidh kar rehe thi," she said shaking her head at me. Jeevika Di smiled, "chalo Manvi, I can help you," she said sweetly. We cooked for what felt like hours and he still wasn't here. I heard my phone beep and literally jerked up from the sofa to answer it.
Virat: Can you please let bhabhi know me and bhai just left, her phone is off. I will see you in a little bit
I smiled, "Jeevika di, Viren Bhaiya and Virat just left," I told her as I read the text. She smiled at me, "thik hai, my phone is actually dead Manvi, tumhara paas charger hai, I forgot mine at home," she said looking at her phone. "ha, aayie na, its in my room," I said leading her upstairs. We sat upstairs talking and after some time I heard the doorbell ring and heard Viren bhiaya and Virat come in exhausted. I fiddled with my fingers waiting for Jeevika di to finish talking so we could go down. She smiled at me, I think catching me again, "aau Manvi, chalo, lets go down," she said ending my torture. "Hey Manvi," Viren Bhaiya said pulling me in for a hug and Virat did the same. "Namaste Aunty," they both said bending down. My mom smiled, "chalo beta, you must be hungry," she said leading them straight to the food.
"mmm, Aunty, aap ki khana ka toh jhavab hi nahi, Uncle is really lucky, Ma if you ever want me to get married, just look for someone exactly like Aunty, I will say yes in a heartbeat" Virat said licking the chicken curry off his fingers. "Virat wese aaj khana Kadambari Aunty ne nahi, Manvi ne banai hai," Jeevika di said shaking her head at Virat. Virat immediately fell red at what he said earlier, "umm, yeah its really good Manvi," he said looking down completely embarrassed now. Mom smiled, "beta, she learned from me, I cook better than this so you said nothing wrong," she said getting up and hugging him. "thank you aunty," he said feeling much better. We all sat down and talked for a while before everyone headed to sleep. "Manvi, Vanshika didi is sleeping with me, can you show Jeevika beti her and Viren's room. Virat will have your room for tonight, tum chota wali guest room me so jau," mom asked as she took Vanshika Aunty to her room. "ji mom," I said leading all four of us upstairs. "Jeevika di, Viren bhaiya, this is your room," I said leading them in. I walked over to my room with Virat, "aur yeh aap ki room," I showed him as I took off the sheets. He smiled at me as I fixed the bed for him. I left him to sleep not able to say much more and went to smaller guest room next to it to fix my stuff when I heard singing, it was kuch kuch hota hai, I immediately recognized the song and walked over to my room. Virat was in his undershirt singing to the song causally as he surfed the net under my covers. "oh hi Manvi," he said causally. "Virat you sing so well, aur tum meri tarif kar rehe thi, " I said still shocked at his amazing singing voice. He smiled, "I am in medical school, that doesn't mean I lose all my interests, wese all you talked about was you last time, self-centered much" he said hinting to the fact that I never really asked him about his interests last time we met, it was just all about me. I felt bad, "oh sorry," I said feeling awkward as I was about to walk out he called my name, "Manvi wait don't feel bad, I was just joking, wese if you are not sleepy would you mind helping me, I have a case study I am trying to do and I don't understand it, Aunty told me you are in your third year too, maybe you can help?" he said asking me to come back in. I walked back to the bed and he immediately got up to pull up a chair, tum bed me betho Manvi, I will sit on the chair, you will be more comfortable that way," he said as I sat down. Once I was done reading through the case study I saw him asleep on the chair and smiled, he looked like a baby. I got up and tapped him but he still didn't get up. I raked my fingers through his hair as I tapped it again and he got up startled this time. "oh, did I fall asleep, sorry Manvi, its just I work with bhai all day at the office and then come home and try to study but it's too much," he sighed. I stared at him, "so you work in the business and are in medical school too?" I asked confused. He explained how he got his undergrad in business and science both but then decided to go to medical school rather than get an MBA and sighed again. "it's just too hectic but I feel bad at all the pressure dad puts on bhai and feel like I have a responsibility towards the family business too," he said as he put up his laptop. I explained the case study to him and how to work through it and he smiled and thanked me, "you really are sweet Manvi, I really can see why mom admires you so much. You are smart, you cook so well, you sing and dance like a professional Bollywood actress, not to forget the beautiful paintings you make and on top of that you are so well cultured. You respect everyone, and are extremely helpful, just like when you helped bhabhi cook dinner that night. Kadamabari Aunty is really lucky she has you as a daughter, your parents must be really proud," he said smiling at me. I gasped at all the things he already noticed about me. He smiled seeing my shyness, "and you are extremely humble too, to add to that list," he said giggling. "its late are you not sleepy yet?" he asked looking at me wide awake. I shook my head, "don't you remember our texts from the other day, I really am used to staying up," I replied. He smiled, "I'll keep you company then, it's the least I can do for all the help you gave me." Now I just felt bad, he was asleep a couple minutes ago, I knew he was just being nice. "Nahi, you can go to sleep, we can have fun tomorrow when you better rested," I said forcing him on the bed. "and you are extremely caring too, how much more are you going to make me add to the list?" he asked chuckling some more. "you can add on to the list when you are better rested, abhi go to sleep, good night," I said smiling as I left the room. In the middle of the night I realized my phone was in my room and walked back over to see him cuddling to a pillow trying to get warm. I smiled as a warm fuzzy sensation came over me. I shrugged the feelings away and brought another cover to put over him and walked out smiling still not understanding these new emotions that run thorough me every time I see him.
