Prologue:

Hope is what I find in the darkest night

You're standing there

Sparkling brightly

And that is all I need

In the dark between stars

There was no safer place than being here

Tucked in snugly

With you watching over me

In the dark between stars

The silence is no longer deafening

The soft breaths escaping your lips hum like music to my ears

I wasn’t exhausted anymore

I could listen to this all day

Not just when we lay together

In the dark between stars

It becomes difficult to hate the world

To hate everyone

When you are there

Like as if you sent by God, Himself.

In the dark between stars

Being alone was the best way to stay hidden

But you pulled me out of my roots

Loneliness is no longer the best company

You are

In the dark between stars

Chapter 1: Loved

"I hate you" Geet screamed heading into the house and chucking her bag across the hall and flopped onto the sofa wailing. Short breaths puffed out as she sucked in and cried noisily.

"Arre, Geet" Shivani, her mother briskly hurried to her daughter's side caressing her hair. The echoes of her daughter's cries ringing in her ear. "Kya hua beta?" she hefted Geet up and enveloped her narrowing her eyes at her son who'd walked in slowly. "Kabir! What did you do?" Shivani snapped continuously stroking her daughter's hair attempting to soothe her. But it was not working.

"I didn’t do anything" Kabir answered shrugging his shoulders.

"Mama, he is such a liar" Geet finally turned to her mother seeking comfort in her gentle strokes, fat tears rolling down her cheeks. "He kept calling me a nerd! Now his friends call me that! They also called me behenji on the way home" she burrowed her face on her mother's chest crying again. "Maan bhi" she sobbed, she was devastated that the boys she'd crushed on all teased her, atop of that her brother had started it all.

"Kabir" Shivani looked horrified and turned to her son, she glowered at him, if her eyes could shoot fireballs, her son would have turned into ashes. Since it could not do that, she crouched and grabbed her sandal aiming for her son.

"Mama!" he laughed moving to the side just missing the sandal hitting him. "No one would believe she's my sister" he pointed out brushing his fingers through his thick dark hair and checking himself out in the mirror. "Look at that" he pointed to Geet then pointed his thumb at him, "And look at this" he was oh so proud of his looks. The Singhania's were blessed with great genes, they were all great looking, it was just unfortunate that Geet was going through the phase of braces, pimples and short limp hair.

"Are you picking on my Geet again?" Aparna appeared angrily having heard her granddaughter's cries.

"Aaah nani" Kabir winced as she pulled on his ear.

"Maafi mang" she demanded firmly nudging him with her cane in the other hand.

"What? No!" he would’ve shaken his head if he could.

"Kabir!" she warned pinching his earlobe harder.

"Alright, alright" he hissed wincing. "I'm sorry".

"Aur haan, you better make sure no one calls my baby girl nerd" Aparna stated firmly.

"Okay, I've said okay" he frowned and rubbed when Aparna released his ear.

Cry baby he thought as he looked at his young sister crying and snuggling up to his mother. "Mama! Mujhe khana do please, I'm hungry. I'm going to go out later to play football".

Shivani rolled her eyes, "Accha, go and change now" she waved him away then turned to Geet. "C'mon my baccha" she cradled her daughter's face pressing a kiss on her nose and wiping away the tears. "You're my good baccha, na?"

"I hate Kabir bhai" she mumbled.

"I do too" Shivani answered making Geet smile, she brushed her nose with Geet's telling her daughter to freshen up and join her in the dining room. Geet sniffed agreeing and stood, Aparna stopped her kissing her cheeks and enveloping her and released her.

Geet changed out of her school uniform and changed into a pair of joggers and a plain t-shirt, she cursed unable to put her hair into a ponytail or a bun, she envied the beautiful girls she'd seen hanging around her brother and his friends. She dragged a brush through her short hair tucking them behind her ear and joined everyone in the dining room.

Kabir was already scoffing his food as if he hadn’t eaten for years.

Disgusting she scrunched her nose at her pig brother and smiled as her mother passed her a paratha with a side of curry.

"I'm sure I smelled something nice"

Shivani laughed seeing Maan enter sniffing the air, he placed the football down heading into the kitchen washing his hands and joined them at the table. Geet avoided looking at him as she was still peeved by the names they'd called her in school. She was also embarrassed; she couldn’t believe she crushed on him. It stopped tonight she thought.

Maan shrugged ignoring her as well and helped himself to the spicy chicken pasta Shivani cooked.

Geet's scowl quickly disappeared, "Bhai" she called seeing her elder brother return from work.

Shit Kabir cursed and attempted to gain Geet's attention but she didn’t spare him a glance.

"Prem, sort Kabir out right now" Aparna was quick to announce. "He picked on Geet and made her cry" she pointed out. "Look, my baby girl's eyes are still swollen".

Prem turned narrowing his eyes, "Do you not learn your lesson?"

"Bhai… I… I…" he stammered and looked at Geet who'd turned her face away ignoring him. Kabir turned to Maan who was in the right mind to keep quiet in front of Prem.

"Kabir, if you don’t want to lose your privileges of living here then I suggest you treat my princess right" Prem stated with a warning, he walked off into the kitchen washing his hands and returned to the table taking a seat besides his sister.

"You all side with her" Kabir complained. "Every time, you don’t care what damage she's causing to my image" he cribbed wincing when Maan kicked him under the chair in warning gesturing to Prem.

"Tomorrow, I'll sort out that image for you" Prem seethed. "In school, in front of everyone. I'll show you what image you'll have left".

"Aww shit… no bhai. Please. I was just joking" Kabir begged and turned to Geet. "I'm sorry, Geet. I'm sorry. I won't ever do it again".

Geet glanced over at her brother, Kabir then sighed. "Fine. You're going to have to give me your pocket money for this entire week" she responded.

"What? I'm not giving you my money, I want to buy my new game" he shook his head.

"Bhai, he called me a nerd and behenji" she grassed to Prem. "He also…"

"Alright, alright" Kabir intervened quickly. "I'm sorry! I'll give it you".

Maan snickered covering it up with a cough.

"Bhai" Geet looked over at Maan then turned to Prem.

Maan pleaded with his eyes shaking his head subtly.

"You know…."

"Mera hogaya" Maan stood, his fork dropping with a clattering sound on his plate. "Thanks aunty, I'll see you at football" he told Kabir then pressed a kiss to Shivani's cheek grabbing his football and escaped from there not needing a blasting from Prem.

Geet smirked, "Bhai, you know there's a book tour coming for my favourite author. Can I go?"

"Tell me the details after dinner, princess" Prem answered, Geet nodded cheerfully.

"Did she tell Prem bhai about me?" Maan inquired when Kabir arrived for football practise.

"No, nerdy said something about a book tour" he responded.

"Yoo hoo!"

Kabir glanced over arching his brows seeing Sheetal and Sasha stood on the side lines with the other cheerleaders whistling and fluttering their eyelashes.

"Are you done drooling on them?" Maan laughed as their coach whistled for their attention.

"Nowhere close" Kabir grinned and jogged over towards their coach.

"Yo isn't that nerdy?" One of guys called out.

Kabir groaned when he noticed his sister riding her bike yapping away with her nerdy friends, he glanced over noting the cheerleaders snickering and gesturing towards him.

Great! They all know nerdy is my sister he cursed inwardly.

"Hey Nerdy!" One of his friends called out teasingly, Kabir nudged Maan when he started laughing.

"Why is she even here?" Maan asked dropping the football down and dribbled and did a few tricks. "Did she not learn her lesson before?" he mused.

"Shit" Kabir muttered.

"What?" Maan looked up to where Kabir was staring and straightened. "He's dead" he muttered seeing Prem striding over towards their friend in determination.

"Bhai" Kabir jogged over with Maan following.

Prem had bunched the guy's shirt and pulled him close. "Say it, again tough guy".

"I… I… I was just joking" he stammered.

"Joking? You wouldn’t find it funny if I throw you across the field!" Prem scowled.

"Bhai" Kabir mumbled unsurely, "Uh… Jay have learnt his lesson. Right?"

"Right" Jay nodded quickly. "I… I… I won't do it again".

"I never want to hear again that any of you teased my sister" Prem warned releasing Jay making him stumble back. Prem shot a glare to Kabir and his friends.

Instantly, everyone's head jerked up and down with mutters of promise.

Since that day, no one teased Geet Singhania.
