MARRYING KHUSHI
Part 31
Section 3
Khushi walked in to their bedroom, her steps slowing as she approached her husband.
"Where were you?" he roared.
"Downstairs." she frowned.
"What were you doing there?" he asked, his eyes cold and angry.
"Naniji was telling me about the mukhdikhai function today evening." she said.
ASR frowned.
"Jiji and I have to sit with dupattas over our heads." Khushi laughed. "The ladies will lift the dupattas and look at our faces... like playing hide and seek!"
ASR frowned at her.
"You and Jiju will have to join us." she smiled without a care. It would be fun, with lots of people in the house.
ASR almost recovered from his temper tantrum seeing her happy smile, but her next sentence sent waves of fury through him.
"Nanheji too with be with us. He said he will take care of all the gifts the ladies give us." she smiled.
ASR turned away, his jaw clenched. It was better that he leave the house. If he stayed there for a moment longer, NK would find himself strangled and dead.
He swiftly pulled on his coat.
"Are you going to the office?" Khushi asked uncertainly. Jiju was at home. Why was her husband going out to work the very next day after their marriage?
"Yes. What is the use of remaining here?" he asked, his eyes burning with anger.
"Mukhdikhai?" she asked, frowning.
"I don't have time for that crap!" He bustled out of the room like a tornado, leaving Khushi floundering.
The Raizada ladies watched a stern-faced ASR walking down the steps towards the front door.
"Chotey?" Di asked, scared.
He spared a glance for her. "I have to go to the office."
"Now?" Anjali looked confused at her Nani & Mami.
"Bhai, shall I...?" Akash looked confused.
"No. I will manage." ASR said.
"Arnav Bitwaa, today is the mukhdikhai, Hello Hi Bye Bye!" Mami tried to stop him.
ASR hesitated.
"Nannav, how can you leave Khushiji like this?" NK asked, scratching his head.
ASR grit his teeth and walked out, leaving his family looking after him slack-jawed.
"Nani, we have to do something." Anjali whispered.
Mami & Nani nodded.
ASR looked at his watch. The mukhdikhai must have started. He paced along his office like a raging bull.
Aman sidled out of the door to avoid the line of fire.
Why hadn't she called him? ASR wondered. She could have called him and asked him to come over. He would have...
RM was decorated in a grand manner for the function. All the guests looked awed at the arrangements.
Payal sat, dressed in a golden lehenga, smiling shyly at the many compliments pouring in.
Khushi, dressed in a pink-coral lehenga, looked at the phone. Could she call Arnavji? Or would he be busy at the office? She picked up her phone, and turned to see the pseudo-sympathetic faces of the aunties.
"Akash is here. Where is Arnav?" Mrs. Mishra asked.
Nani said smiling, "He had some urgent work in the office."
Mrs. Tiwari smirked. "But to leave his new bride alone the next day after their marriage... Lagta he he was not very interested in marrying from the backwoods of Lucknow. Why, Devyaniji, did you force him to marry a nobody?"
Khushi blanched. Payal looked shocked at the lack of manners of the guests.
"A billionaire and the winner of the best young entrepreneur of India award, a much sought-out bachelor... Why should he opt for a bride from Lucknow when he could have married any girl from Delhi?" Mrs. Singhania asked, getting her own back after Nani had rejected her daughter's proposal for ASR.
Arnavji was so popular? So rich? Girls liked him? He could marry any one? Then why had he married her -- Jalebi Bai from Lucknow, 12th pass, bringing with her a dowry of Devi Maiyya, ber, channa, some old jewellery and Mittu?
Her heart quailed within her. The phone fell from her nerveless fingers to the seat beside her.
"Do you seriously thinks that anyone can force hamre Arnav Bitwaa to do something that he does not wants to do?" Mami asked.
The ladies looked at each other.
"He married Khussi bitiyaa because he wanted to. And we are very happy with his choice." Nani asserted.
"We don't wants a bride who stays out till midnight drinking brandy and whiskey, wines and beers!" Mami took a dig at Mrs. Singhania's daughter. "We wanted sanskari brides, and we have gots them, Hello Hi Bye Bye!"
There was perfect silence in the hall.
Khushi felt her heart flutter in pain.
"Khushi." came the soft call.
All turned to the sound in shock.
ASR walked to Khushi as though he had not noticed the silence or the tension in the air.
He sat down beside her and took hold of her hand. It trembled in his hold like the petals of a rose in wind. He tightened his grasp.
"I am sorry I am late. Work had piled up in my absence." he explained. "Forgive me."
Khushi stole a quick look at his penitent face & nodded.
He leaned forward and kissed her cheek soundly.
Mrs. Singhania felt her head spin before she collapsed in a heap on the floor at the sight of ASR's PDA.
