Part 4: Day 10
Section 3
Khushi glared at him.
Arnav got out of bed and extended his arm to help her up.
Khushi looked at his hand, and then at his twinkling eyes. She gave his hand the royal ignore and got up under her own steam, rubbing her hip bone.
Arnav lowered his hand, the smile still on his lips.
"Scared? Of you?" Khushi flipped her head, sending the strand of hair on her cheek flying in the air.
Arnav smiled looking at her disgruntled face and her rapid breathing.
"So you are not scared of me?" Arnav confirmed.
"No."
"Then come to bed." he invited, his husky voice doing unmentionable things to her insides.
Khushi knew a dangerous thing when she saw one. She moved away from the bed on rapid feet, her nose in the air. She quickly occupied the recliner.
"I will sleep here." she declared.
"You won't." Arnav replied, determination evident in his tone.
Khushi turned away from him, making herself comfortable on the recliner.
Arnav strode to her and scooped her up in his arms.
"Chodiye hamein!" Khushi demanded as she squirmed and tried to free herself, beating her legs in the air as though she were swimming.
Arnav did not bother to reply as he lowered her gently on to the bed on his side, laying her head on his pillow.
Khushi tried to get up. Arnav sat down on the bed by her and put his hands on either side of her, blocking her attempts.
Khushi looked warily at him as her head fell back against the pillow.
Arnav looked down at her beautiful face.
He bent his head and dropped a gentle kiss on her forehead. "Khushi, I love you." he whispered against her skin.
Khushi looked at him, silent. Her lips trembled slightly.
"Khushi..." he encouraged her to respond, to say what he knew to be true.
Khushi remained stubbornly silent.
"You can remain silent, Khushi, but your eyes speak to me. Always." he claimed.
Horrified eyes looked in to his serious eyes. Khushi quickly turned her head away to avoid looking at him.
"You can hide your eyes from me, Khushi, but you can't hide your breathlessness." Arnav murmured.
Khushi stared at him, flustered. She tried to hold her breath. Failing at that, she tried to breathe slowly, drawing deep breaths in to her lungs.
"You can control your breathing, Khushi..." he said, laughter hidden in the words. "But what about your dhadkan? Why is your heart racing?"
Khushi clutched her heart, feeling furious with herself. What could she do with this heart of hers? It was too susceptible to this Shaitan.
She turned away to hide her eyes, her breathing, and her heart from him.
Arnav smiled, and crawled in to the bed, curling himself around her. He put his arm around her, and clasped her hand in his, gently making space for his fingers in between hers. Khushi lay still, scared to move.
Suddenly, it began to rain. Fat rain drops fell on a dry earth, wetting it in seconds, sending a seductive musk to waft on the wind. Leaves danced in the wind, branches bent to the fury of the rain and the wind...
Arnav lay curled around his wife, his hand in hers.
Darkness fell around them like a cloak, and the rain sung a lullaby to the pair. This was all he wanted to be happy in life, Arnav thought. Her hand in his, moments of togetherness in their own choti si duniya... that was all he longed for. As soon as Shyam was kicked out and Di's life was settled, he could hope for some khushi in his.
Lightning streaked across the dark sky, soon followed by thunder. Khushi, who always clung to her Jiji during lightning & thunder, pulled her hand out of Arnavji's, turned and threw herself in to his arms, hiding her face in the crook of his neck.
Arnav smiled tenderly as he gathered her into his arms.
He spent most of the night savouring her warmth in his arms and dropping kisses on her hair.
