Zoya turned and nestled into the strong chest. Wait, chest? Zoya's eyes snapped open and she whipped her head up to stare at'
"Oh no," she whispered. How she had fallen asleep, she knew, but how she had gotten tangled in his bed with him, she didn't know.
"Mr. Khan," she whispered as she tried to detangle herself from him. She swore loudly when his grip tightened around her waist. Zoya grabbed his hands and tried to pry them away, but to no avail.
"Mr. Khan," she whispered gently. He groaned and turned over on his side, his arms detaching from her waist. Zoya sighed thankfully and stood up, brushing herself off. She looked at the time and jumped out of her skin as she realised that it was past 9 pm. Mr. Khan had to take his medicine at 8 pm.
Zoya dashed out of the room and into the kitchen to grab a glass of water before hurrying back and trying to wake him up.
"Mr. Khan! Please wake up! You have to take your medicine!" Zoya said, shaking him roughly. His eyes cracked open and he groaned as he tried to sit up. Zoya moved forward to help him, making sure she didn't injure him even further. She placed a few pillows behind his back and handed him the tablets. He took them and downed them with a single gulp.
"Feeling better?" She asked when he handed the glass back to her. He nodded and surveyed his injured arm.
"Don't!" She grabbed his arm as he tried moving it around.
"You need to take care of yourself," Zoya said.
"Where's Tanu?" He asked. Zoya froze for a moment and then cleared her throat.
"She's in her room," she replied. He nodded again and relaxed against the cushions. Zoya sat down next to him and jumped back up when he looked at her sharply.
"What?" She asked.
"What what?"
"I asked first," she said. He rolled his eyes and looked up at her.
"Ms. Farooqui, if you want to ask me something, you may. Otherwise you won't stop nagging me, something which I am not in the mood for," he said lazily. Zoya's mouth fell open. That bloody git wasn't even feeling well yet somehow he found a way to take a dig at her.
"Well, Mr. Khan, even if you hadn't told me to ask you, I would still ask you," she said.
"I know," he replied. Zoya growled and pulled up a chair next to his bed.
"Mr. Khan,"
"Yes, Ms. Farooqui?"
"What do you remember about the fire?" She asked. Asad blinked and looked at her questioningly.
"Why do you ask?" He asked.
"Just answer the question. What do you remember?"
"Tanu and I went down to the store room for some photos that she had asked for. She went to make an important call and I kept on going down to the storeroom. I found the photo box and I was looking through them until I smelt something burning. The next thing I know the entire storeroom is on fire and well, after that'I don't remember," he told her.
"Tanveer was with you?" Zoya asked.
"She wasn't with me, she saved me!" He exclaimed. Zoya froze as his words sunk in.
"Excuse me?" She asked, convinced that she had heard wrong. He couldn't possibly think that that lying cow saved him'could he?
"The person who saved me had to be Tanu. She was the only one there," he said to her.
"She didn't save you!" She blurted. Mr. Khan looked at her and shook his head.
"Ms. Farooqui, I wasn't completely out of my mind. I know it has to be Tanu. No one else was home," he continued.
"YES YOU WERE!" Zoya roared, guilt consuming her when he winced and grabbed his head.
"You were out of your mind because if you weren't you would've known that it was me who saved you!" She said, her voice quieter than before. Asad shook his head.
"Ms. Farooqui, you weren't home, how could you have saved me. It was Tanu who saved me," he said. Allah miyaan, what's wrong with this man? Oh great, now he's frowning. Oh no, he's frowning!
"Mr. Khan, is it really that hard to believe that I saved you?" Zoya asked, exasperated.
"Yes," he answered simply. She smacked her forehead and dragged her hand across her face.
"Allah miyaan, what's wrong with you, Mr. Khan?" She groaned. "You honestly don't remember me coming to save you?"
"I don't remember anything. All I know is that no one was home except Tanu and I," he told her.
"You honestly don't remember? I can't believe this! You were the one that was begging me not to leave a few hours ago! You wouldn't let me go to get you something to eat and insisted I stayed with you! Yet here you are, denying the fact that I saved you!" Zoya ranted. Asad looked at her, his expression going from frowning to shock then to something that looked a lot like embarrassment.
"I was not!" He told her.
"You so were!" She fired back.
"Ms. Farooqui, you're letting your fantasies get to your head," he shot back. Zoya spluttered and growled before lunging at him, grabbing a pillow on the way. Asad didn't know what hit him, all he understood was that one minute he was arguing with her and the next she was hitting him with a pillow.
"Ms. Farooq-," he was cut off as another blow of the cushion landed straight in his face.
"Don't you dare 'Ms. Farooqui' me, Mr. Asad Ahmed Khan!" She hollered at him as she continued her assault, her worry about his injuries leaving her immediately.
"Argh!" He grabbed his arm in pain.
"Mr. Khan!" Zoya screamed as she halted her attack and grabbed his arm. "Are you okay? Allah miyaan, what's wrong with me? I'm so sorry Mr. Khan!"
"Ms. Farooqui?"
"No, no, Mr. Khan. I shouldn't have hit you like that! Oh lord!" She continued as she rubbed his arm gently.
"Ms. Farooqui?" He repeated a bit more forcefully.
"I'm such an idiot Mr. Khan. I can't believe I attacked you with a pillow! What is the matter with me? I can't beliemphgh."
"Hush," he told her, his hand covering her lips. "You're worrying about the wrong arm."
Zoya let go of his arm as if burnt and stared at him with saucer-wide eyes. She looked down and realised that the arm she had indeed been worrying about had definitely been the wrong one. Zoya felt her face heat up and cleared her throat.
"As I was saying," she squeaked. Zoya clapped a hand to her mouth and stared at him as his face broke out into a breath-taking, knee-weakening, heart-hammering, head-spinning smile.
"Could you not," she murmured as he opened his mouth to say something.
"I wasn't saying anything," he said holding up his hands in mock defence.
"List-,"
"Jammy?" Zoya's hands turned to fists in her lap as she recognized the voice. Why can't she just kill herself? Zoya's blood boiled when Tanveer pushed past her straight into his arms. His open arms. Her anger flared when Tanveer buried her head in his chest. The place that was rightfully hers. Whoa! Where in the God's green land did that come from? Rightfully hers? Well it had to be, after all, she did spend more time on that chiselled chest more than Tanveer did, the rational part of her mind argued. Zoya cleared her head of her thoughts and focused on what was going on in front of her.
"Tanu, I'm fine. Thanks to you, of course," he said to her. Zoya felt like smacking her head again. Not again!
"Me?" Tanveer asked.
"You saved me, I'm thankful to you," he said, kindly. Tanveer shook her head.
"No, Jammy. I didn't save you," she said. Zoya stared at her, shock etched clearly on her face. Whatever it was, she wasn't expecting that.
Asad glanced up at Zoya to see her shock and then looked back down again when her expression morphed into an "I told you so" look. He turned his attention back to Tanveer, who was smiling sweetly at him as she tried to make him understand that it wasn't her that saved him. He didn't know whether to feel like a fool or to feel guilty, after all, he had told Zoya straight to her face that he didn't believe her.
"Are you sure?" He asked dumbly, refusing to look at Zoya, who had listened to her brain and smacked her forehead.
"No, she's probably just hallucinating, Mr. Khan," Zoya said, sitting down next to him only to shoot back to her feet when he sent her a "What do you think you're doing?" look.
"Mr. Khan, why do you always look at me like this?" Zoya asked. Asad cleared his throat and turned his attention back to Tanveer again, who was smiling at the pair.
"Cut it, you two," Tanveer said as Zoya opened her mouth to say something.
"If you two are done fighting then I just want to tell you that we have been invited to an engagement ceremony. Zoya," Tanveer said, grabbing Zoya's attention. "Khaala wants you to stay back and take care of Jammy."
"Okay."
"No."
Zoya and Asad glared at each other icily.
"Cut it!" Tanveer said again.
"I'll be back," Zoya said as she turned and left the room.
"Jammy," Tanveer said gently. He looked up at her.
"How are you feeling?" He nodded silently.
"Jammy, please I didn't want to make Zoya feel bad so I had to tell her that it was her that saved you. You know how immature she is," Tanveer said. Asad's gaze snapped up to meet hers.
"What?"
"Yeah, I couldn't say anything else in front of her. In fact, I didn't tell Khaala and Najma either that it was me because I knew Zoya wouldn't want me to," Tanveer continued.
"Tanu, one minute. You just told me that'she just told me that she'"
"I know, Jammy, I know. Jammy, Zoya wants to get closer to you," Tanveer said, resting a hand on his.
"Get closer to me? Why would Ms. Farooqui do that?" Asad asked, now genuinely and utterly confused.
"Think about it, Jammy. She wants to stay here. So the only way she can do that is by getting closer to you. What better way to do that than saying she saved you so that you will be forever in her debt," Tanveer said. Asad stared at her, he didn't want to believe the words he was hearing but everything just seemed to click together. Was Ms. Farooqui really trying to get closer to him?
