Chapter 1

Prologue

Khushi stood in front of the great iron gates of the Gupta Residence. A fine shiver ran down her back.

"He Devi Maiyya," she breathed in a soft shaken whisper, cowed by the totally opulent splendour of the entrance and the magnificent grounds and mansion beyond it. The millions of butterflies that had been playing havoc in her stomach went wild. She pinched her eyes shut for a second, hearing the taxi that had brought her up to here roll away.

She was alone there in the weak January sunlight filtering through the bare branches overhead. It felt odd to think that hardly one week ago, she had been living with her Buaji in a secluded part of Lucknow, unaware to the fact that there was a rich family, the Gupta family, who lived in Delhi, let alone that she might have some relation to them.

She would perhaps have never known it if the cold and distant woman, who was supposedly her mother, had not ignored her for most of her life, making Buaji decided that it was time to reveal to Khushi the dark secret she had buried in her heart for nineteen long years...
