Chapter 5: Resurfacing Grounds
She stared at the twinkling raindrops that fell outside of the window as the clouds roared mightily above. The moonlight however was very surprisingly visible even through the clouds and rain. It was very paradoxical to the situation in her life right now. She touched the mangalsutra that she now discretely wore under her high neck tshirt, and then her thoughts sailed away to him, like they always did nowadays.
It has been five days since her family came back to Pune after the wedding broke off. And not a minute passed by where the atmosphere was not skimmed with discomfort and sorrow. Initially Anjali, Nani and even Arnav had called them continuously trying to convince Shashi and the stubborn body of an aunt she had, but they were hung up on everytime. After the third day though, nani had decided to let a week or so pass to let things settle between the families.
She however had been talking to Anjali and Nani as discretely as she could. Arnav was another story altogether. He spoke less with her to begin with and now even that amount seemed to have decreased.
But with the minimal amount of contact, she had been able to find out arnav has been tracing for akash everywhere and could not finding yet. Wherever he went, if he left the city, he did not use any transport that required needing his name and details. So that means he was either in the city or was moving around with a different id.
She remembered the conversation she had with Arnav when he told her this.
"I will find him Khushi, wherever he is. And I will knock sense into him so he marries Payal. Tell Payal that he will accept her just as she deserves. Another girl will lot suffer the same fate Di had to go through", he said determinedly.
"I know you will, Arnav. But honestly, finding akash will not resolve the situation for JiJi. I don't know what Devi maiyya has destined for Di, but whatever it is, it will happen no matter how much we try...", she said drifting off into her thoughts about their wedding.
Arnav stilled for a second and the tension in the silence could be almost touched. He cleared his throat, "uhh Yes... Well...if that's what you believe...", he said awkwardly.
"I need to go... I'll keep you informed on Akash. Bye", he said as he hung up on her.
She sighed as she stared at the phone. She didn't know why but it felt like he was avoiding her, busying himself in work and not talking to her. Not that they spoke much before, but he atleast had the decency to ask her well beings before. She remembered how he used to message her if Di ever told him about any of her exams and of she was ever sick while she was studying in New Zealand. And that time they couldn't even be friends to be precise. And now that they were married why was he behaving so weird... So distant... Like he was running away from her.
She sighed again as she heard the discussion that took place nowadays during this time of the night from downstairs.
"the media is blowing this completely out of proportion!", her father complained about payal's wedding news.
"please calm down", her mother said soothingly.
"don't worry Shashi babua. We will find her a match even better than this one. I've been telling you since the beginning that you should have gotten her married to my best friend's elder son! They are good human beings and the boy is more handsome and suitable to my Payaalia than that son of Manorama!", she puffed.
"but JiJi how could we decide another rishta for payal so soon. It hasn't even been a week yet, she needs to recover from this...", garima trailed off.
"once she gets engaged and married, everything will settle down and payal will forget this soon too. The sooner we get the rishta done, the sooner the media and payal will be back to normal", she said convincingly.
She then heard her dad finally speak up. "I'm sick and tired of this. Fine JiJi we will do it your way. All to the boy's parents and see if we can arrange for a meeting for the kids to meet"
She then heard her aunt squeal and move around about the house in excitement. She rolled her eyes. Why could these people not give her poor JiJi a break!
Her phone beeped again with a new message. She saw and opened it. With everything happening, she almost forgot that she was about to join a new project at a designing company that was going to start tomorrow. She prayed to Devi maiyya all would atleast be fine now.
But little did she know, nothing was ever going to be fine again.
