Chapter 1: Hidden Facts
She watched him yelling at someone on the phone yet again for the third time today. He finished talking and threw his phone on his bed. It was her sister Payal's wedding today with his cousin Akash and there was so much going on at the same time. Guests pouring in, people running to get preparations done, people getting dressed, and the mandap was getting decorated as well, yet however one person remained completely detached from all the doing in his own home. Anjali Di had asked her to go up to his room and ask him to come down.
She knocked on his half opened door. "What is it?", he shouted with evening looking back at her. "umm…Di asked me to call you down, she needed to talk to you about the mandap arrangement", she said nervously as he turned around. His frown tamed a bit and he just walked passed her without giving so much as a glance back.
This has been going on for more than a week now, she observed. Akash and His family had been family friends way before she was even born. She had been really close with this family and they pampered her like their own child since she was the youngest. But since her family moved to Pune, 13 years ago, she had kind of lost touch with the family. Especially Arnav, when they were younger they used to fight their heads off all the time, and he was always rude with her for the most part. Yet when time came, he stood by her, when she was hurt, when people made fun of her and when she would struggle with her homework. With time, their fights faded away and a sort of formalness developed between them, especially when she would come to visit from time to time. He would be cordial with her, but would not talk beyond that, but she always knew he cared for her somewhere deep down.
But this time, the problem needed for him to speak up. It was last week when she found out. Khushi had returned from New Zealand after finishing her last year of her Master Degree and she had directly flown into Delhi to attend her Sister's wedding ceremonies. The night she came, she saw him pacing outside the house in the front lawn, talking to someone. Later the next day, Aman, had come and she had overheard them talking.
"Sir, according to your Nanaji's will, the only way you could get that money is to..you know. I spoke to all investors and the board of Directors as well sir and they are worried too. It won't be long before the media announces the downfall of AR, due to the debts it is suffering from. Sir, I think we should atleast let Mamaji or Akash Sir to know about this", Aman suggested.
"No, Aman. There's a wedding happening right now. They need not be bothered. I can handle it, I will find a way out of this", he said looking determinedly towards the wall.
"Sir, they will find out in a few days if we can't fix our problem, and maybe it is better to find out from you than the media…", he prompted.
"I'll think about it", he said and Aman nodded and left as she hid behind the door to his room.
She understood AR was suffering from a huge loss, and that the money could be arranged with the will. But what was that about Nanaji's will? As far as she knew, Arnav had most of the properties and businesses under his name, then how could a will help him get his money?
Later that evening, she sat by Naniji as she massaged her hair with oil, like she did everytime she visited. "Naniji, can I ask you something?", she asked. "Yes, Bitya of course you can". She turned around and faced Nani, "I was studying this case in the contracts and wills and found an interesting clause. Do people still control wills by conditions?", she asked. Nani had helped Nanaji set up AR nearly fifty years ago and she used to work with him. Despite retiring, she was still the wisest of them all when it came to business.
"Hmm, it is possible. People do put forth conditions sometimes", she said. "But have you ever come across such a will in your experience", she added probing her further. Nani thought a little before replying. "Yes, I have. Infact your Nanaji made something similar nearly twenty years ago",s he said thinking about her husband. "What was it Nani", she asked impatiently but then treaded back a little. "I mean I don't mean to impose, it was just to learn about contracts. You don't have to tell me Nani", she smiled. Nani ran a hand lovingly through her hair, "Nonsense Bitiya. How can you ever impose on us. This family is yours too." But then Nani sighed, "Your Nanaji's will had been made a long time ago. But, before he passed away a few years ago he change it. You must promise me you will treat what I'm about to tell you as an informational piece and never discuss it with the family", she asked. "I promise to never discuss this with anyone Nani", she promised.
Nani nodded, "As you now, every company needs to a lot a certain amount of money for surety and use it in times of need. He let a certain amount remain accessible to the family. But he put another amount as part of his will. He saw how stubborn Arnav was about marriage and he also knew with him gone, there might come a time when that money would be needed for use. So put put a condition, he could access the money from his will, if Arnav had married and only the signature of his legal wife can unbind the will. He hoped if Arnav still remained unmarried then atleast for this reason he would marry", she sighed. "As you had probably guessed, this is a special condition clause in his contract", she emphasized.
Khushi was stunned at that fact and remained quiet for the rest of the night. She understood Arnav's dilemma then and prayed he would find some way, preferably not marriage. Somehow her heart felt uncomfortable with the thought of him with another girl.
Time passed by and the wedding ceremony and had started. And she saw him disappear yet again with a worried look on his face. She understood now that his company was at stake, Nanaji's lifetime effort was at stake. She looked around at the family members, of her own blood and those who loved her beyond her own blood. She contemplated asking her dad for help, but she knew Arnav was too proud to ever resort to that option. If he could not get the money, he might have to sell his house and parts of his company and it was painful to even think that. So then she decided, the family had done a lot of her, now it was her turn.Chocochips 2013-02-14 22:48:23
