Chapter 36

Chapter 36
Geet hesitated as she stood outside of their bedroom. She hadn’t stepped inside since leaving after their argument that night. She’d avoided it. But for dadima’s sake and for Diwali, she had agreed to share the room with her soon to be ex-husband.
She composed herself reassuring herself mentally that she could play along for a couple of days and stepped inside. She was relieved to see that Maan was not around.
Chanda, Nakul and Mohan entered soon after with her belongings and settled things into its places.
Geet’s attention was drawn away when her phone rang. She pulled it out and answered. “Hey Pinky”.
“Geet!” Pinky squealed.
“Oh God” she laughed. “Why are you squealing like a high school kid?”
“Yaar, you left early today! Do you know what we’ve received?”
“What?”
“Invites”
“What’s so exciting about invites?”
“It’s to MK’s house! For Diwali”.
“What?” Geet’s eyes widened.
“Yeah! Savitri Devi ji holds a party every two years and invites the staff working on MK sir’s floor because obviously not everyone will fit from the other floors” she explained.
Why? Just why, dadima! Geet whined internally. In one second, I’ll have to tell them I’m married and then next second is I’m divorcing him. She shook her head and said, “Pinky, are you all going to go?”
“Of course! I missed out the year before because my papa took me with him to visit his sister. This party is like a golden ticket, you know. Not everyone has seen the inside of where MK lives”.
“I’m guessing Sasha has” she mocked.
“Sasha never misses it” Pinky cackled hilariously. “She’s always attended the party”.
“Of course she has” Geet muttered. “Pinky, I’ll call you later. I’ve got to go”.
“Ok, but we have to go shopping together for our clothes. It’s the Khurana’s party obviously so I want to be looking my best”.
“Ok, ok” she said quickly and cut the call.
Geet walked out of the room and hurried to dadima’s room.
“Dadima” she called out in a panic.
“What? What’s wrong bete?” Dadima sat up tensed.
“You invited the office, dadima” she plopped down on the edge of the bed and looked at her worried. “Pinky just called to tell me”.
“Bete, I invite them every couple of years” she responded with a chuckle.
“And what will I say when they come and see me?”
“Don’t you want your friends to know?”
“Dadima, maybe if Maan wasn’t a cold fish then I might have considered it” Geet responded. “And there is no point now. In one sentence, I’ll be introducing myself as Mrs Khurana then next I’ll be Ex-Mrs Khurana”.
“Bete, agar aap batana nahi chahte, hum kuch nahi kahenge”.
“What about all the cousins and families?”
“When your friends come, you stay with them. I’ll keep the others under control. Naintara will help as well” Dadima suggested. “Hmm?”
Geet considered it and nodded. “Okay. Waise bhi Sasha will be coming as well. I don’t need her knowing and making life in the office hard for me”.
“Sasha? Why would Sasha make your life hard?”
“She wants to be Mrs Khurana” Geet deadpanned. “Waise dadima, Sasha would have suited better to your cold fish grandson”.
Dadima started laughing and even laughed harder when she noticed Maan in the doorway looking shocked.
Geet unaware of Maan being behind her continued. “Dadima, it isn’t that funny. You should see Sasha’s face when I say MK or call him by name” she chuckled. “But I don’t what part of your robot attracts her? He has zero personality. He’s cold. He doesn’t even talk much. He’s basically a robot in all forms”.
Dadima covered her mouth and laughed. Geet pondered deep in thought.
“Your grandson doesn’t even smile. He doesn’t know flirting. Teek tarah ke kiss bhi nahi dete” she continued and dadima burst out laughing even more.
“Hogaya?”
“Nahi…” Geet’s eyes widened, and she now looked shocked. She slowly turned her head and squeezed her eyes closed when she saw Maan standing there. His arms crossed. She whipped her head away looking at dadima and frowned at not being warned.
Dadima had an amused expression on her face and chuckled.
Geet rolled her eyes and said, “I wasn’t wrong, and I was just stating facts”.
“Oh really?”
“Yep!” Geet stood. “I’ll catch up with you later, dadima” she told her and walked out.
Maan forgot why he had even entered to speak to dadima, Geet’s words echoed in his mind, and he followed behind.
“I’m a cold fish?”
“Yes” she didn’t look back and continued ahead.
“I’m a robot?”
“Yep!”
“I can’t flirt!”
“You can’t” she agreed.
“I can’t kiss properly?”
“Yes”
“Funny how you moaned when I kissed you” he countered.
Geet stopped outside the bedroom door and turned to look at him. “There’s something called faking it. I didn’t want to bruise your ego and make you feel insecure about your masculinity” she explained.
“What?”
Geet nodded.
“So, you were kissing me back out of pity?”
“I believe so” she replied.
Maan gritted his jaw and scowled at her.
“See. Right, there is why I didn’t tell you to your face that you’re a bad kisser”.
“As if you know the difference” he countered mockingly.
“I do in fact” she snapped.
“What?” he narrowed his eyes dangerously. “Who else have you kissed?”
Geet didn’t back down and answered. “That is none of your concern” she turned away from him and entered the bedroom.
“Geet…” Maan grasped her arm and pushed her against the wall. “Who have you kissed?” he asked again in a low harsh tone.
She tilted her chin and stared right into his eyes. Without flinching.
“That. Is. None. Of. Your. Concern” she repeated. “You and I are over”.
“You’re still my wife”.
“If that’s what you want to believe. But you and I ended that night. What I do afterwards and in my personal life is nothing to do with you” she argued.
“You’re… serious?”
“Deadly”.
He released his grasp on her arm and stepped back.
“I gave you the chance, Maan. You didn’t want it. I wasn’t going to be waiting for you to stop being a cold dead fish. So, I found someone who gives me what I want”.
His eyes darkened intensely, and he snapped his head to her. “Gives you what you want?” he repeated punctuating each word.
Geet straightened refusing to back down. “Yes. He gives me companionship, friendship, admiration and his time. He gives me comfort and togetherness”.
“That’s enough” he cut her off before she continued. His mind whirling with images of Geet being with another man. Geet walked away and grabbed her towel and a change of clothes before she disappeared into the washroom.
