Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Geet looked at the appointment letter she held in her hand, she had contemplated on whether she go for it but she had said to Maan that she would attend for the sake of dadima. Geet opted for black skinny pants with a chequered shirt with high heeled boots and a cream jacket. Autumn had graced the Delhi and the air was slightly cold.
She checked herself in the mirror and decided she was dressed okay and looked professional.
Geet had taken dadima's blessings and left the mansion, she sighed seeing Mohan stood besides the car for her.
"Maan ka office kahan hai?" she questioned ignoring the door he held open for her.
"Main leke chalta hoon na" Mohan replied.
"Nahi mujhe kaho, main khud chalungi" she told him and glared when he started to protest. "Mujhe kuch nahi sunna" she stated. "Address" she pulled her phone out and typed out the address on her iPhone maps.
According to her map, it was a 15 minute drive from here which meant if she started walking now she'd be in time for the interview which was 45 minutes from now.
"Okay, I'll see you later" she told Mohan and walked down the path leaving.
"Tu yahan kya kar raha hai?" Nakul questioned passing dadima a cup of tea. "Geet madam ko office chora?"
"Nahi, madam ne mana kiya. Kahan ke woh khud jayenge" Mohan answered.
Dadima chuckled amused, "Yeh Geet bhi na" she shook her head.
45 minutes later, Geet found the building and she gaped.
She tilted her head back, her eyes drawing right to the top then looked back down. "There must be a 100 floors here" she murmured.
"Only 15 floors" someone said.
Geet turned her head and her cheeks warmed feeling flustered. "Aise baatein nahi sunte, bad manners hota hai" she said softly.
"Aapke baatein toh koi bhi sun sakta hai" he responded. "Aap aise akele khuli hawa mein baat kar rahe hai"
Geet chuckled.
"Hi, I'm Viren" he introduced himself.
"Geet" she shook his hand. "Do you work here?" she questioned.
"Yeah, I work here. Are you new or...?" he asked pulling open the door.
"I'm here for an interview" Geet clarified and thanked him stepping inside.
"You must be here for the finance trainee job?" he stopped outside the elevator.
Geet nodded stepping into the elevator, their hands touched the same button. Geet pulled back quickly muttering a quick sorry.
"No need to apologise" Viren smiled.
Geet looked around in awe, the 15th floor was open spaced and only a few private office cabins on either sides. Desks were filled with busy colleagues as they tapped away at their computers, some were huddled around a desk discussing with files open, she noted that there wasn't anyone just stood around talking like one would assume there is always someone making small conversation. They all seemed to deeply involved in working.
"Why don't you let Pinky know you're here for the interview?" Viren said garnering her attention and pointed to the front desk where a young woman was sat operating the reception area.
"Thanks" she walked over.
"Good morning, how can I help?" Pinky smiled standing up.
"Hi, my name's Geet K... Vihaan" she quickly switched to her former surname. "I've got an appointment this morning with the finance manager" she handed Pinky the appointment letter.
"Ah yes" Pinky nodded. "Adi sir informed me this morning, why don't you take a seat?" she pointed to the waiting area. "I'll let him know you're here".
"Thank you" Geet walked over and settled on the chair waiting to be called, until then she looked around curiously. Her eyes drew to the large embossed name of her husband's etched behind the front desk.
"Geet Vihaan?" a young man called out looking at her questioningly.
"Yes" Geet stood and held out her hand, Adi smiled shaking her hand. She held his gaze, her head straight and a smile on her lips. He nodded and led her into his office.
"Did you find us okay?" Adi asked making small talk gesturing her to the chair.
"Yes, it's not too far from my home" Geet answered watching him close the door then turned to sit on the chair he pointed to. She frowned noting Viren sat on the chair opposite.
"Aap?"
"Do you both know each other?" Adi looked between them confused.
"We just met outside" Viren offered. "She was trying to count how many floors are going to be in this building"
"No, I wasn't" Geet quickly said, "I just assumed..." she stopped and reminded herself she was here for her interview and Viren might be one of the interviewers.
"We'll talk more later" Adi said taking a seat. "Miss Vihaan, have you read the information letter that was provided?"
"Yes, I did" Geet nodded.
"Okay, this is Viren my finance support" Adi introduced, "I am the finance manager. I handle the finance department and you will be working for me" he explained then went onto discuss what the role of the finance trainee involved.
"Also, as part of this would mean you attend all meetings and may have to step in for me and Viren if we are not available. There will be duties that will be asked of you from our boss, managing director of the Khurana Constructions Maan Singh Khurana".
Saru yahan bossy hoga Geet thought inwardly and nodded when Adi looked at her expectantly. "Yes, I understand" she said.
"Okay, so the interview will work like this. Viren and I will ask a series of questions. We both will be making notes, don't think you have to stop if we are continuing to write even if you have stopped answering" he continued. "If you don't understand something, we can always come to the question later" he said. "Following the interview, you have a task you'll have to complete. Once we have finished, we will inform you within the week of our decision".
Geet nodded and Viren asked her first question.
After she had finished answering, she attempted reading Adi and Viren's faces but could not make out how they were feeling.
Adi offered her a glass of water which she'd gladly taken a few sips of then she was informed the task is set out by their boss.
Why didn't they tell me that at the beginning? She thought as she followed Adi down towards what she assumed was Maan's office.
Adi knocked and entered upon being called inside, Geet followed and looked around in surprise. Maan's office was simplistic yet classically elegant. He was settled on the other side of his desk, across from him was a small round coffee table with a few leather chairs neatly around.
Behind his desk was a built in shelf that ran across the entire wall, and his files were neatly labelled and in order. On the left side of Maan, it was a glass window from the ceiling to the floor which she guessed was the view of outside. He had some white blinds that were halfway to stop the beaming sunlight blinding him, the room still looked bright despite the halfway drawn blinds.

She looked at the man sat on the desk, Maan seemed totally different to the man she'd come to know over the last 7 months. He looked up from his computer and listened as Adi introduced her.
"Sir, this is the candidate for the trainee job. Geet Vihaan".
It hasn't been two minutes she's been in the office and she's lying about her name Maan kept a stoic expression and nodded.
"Interview is finished?" he questioned.
"Yes sir, Miss Vihaan just has to complete the task and then we'll be done" Adi answered and looked to Geet. "Maan sir will give you the final task, and you'll have to complete it within the allotted time. Once its done, just inform sir and we'll be finished" he explained.
"Okay" Geet nodded.
"It was nice meeting you, I'll be in touch later in the week and inform you of our decision" he said and left the office.
Maan wanted to question her as to why she's lied about her name and her relationship status but reeled himself in, Geet was here for an interview and she was a potential employee. He'll ask later he told himself.
"Over there" Maan pointed and started, "You'll find the materials, and the task is written on the sheets. You have 30 minutes to complete it" he said.
As Maan does with employees, he invites them to complete the task in his office, he uses the time they spend in his office to determine just how they are with him around. He had candidates that were very nervous with his presence that they had walked out bumbling a pathetic excuse. Some candidates usually attempted to show off their knowledge by talking out aloud to themselves and showing their working outs of the task which didn't impress him either. But then, the results did not just rely on the task. If the interview went really well, candidates are given a chance and told to brush up on themselves when he is around.
Maan turned his attention to the computer, he had stolen glances of his wife sat on the chair and scribbling away on the scrap pieces of paper. She'd chew the end of her pen whilst seemingly in deep thoughts then return to scribbling something. She then would move to write on the sheet provided to write down their answers.
Geet doubled checked, triple checked the questions and answers. She looked through the files, re-read the task and looked back at the answers she provided.
Once satisfied she popped the lid back on the pen and stood with the sheets and file approaching Maan's desk.
"Maan, it's complete" she said standing beside the desk waiting further instruction.
"Okay, just leave them on that tray" he pointed to the empty letter tray. Geet placed the documents in the tray as advised.
"You're done now, I don't think Adi would need to see you. He did say he'd get back to you later on this week" he told her.
Geet nodded, "Okay. I'll see you later" she turned to leave when he called out to her.
Maan stood and said, "I'm not asking this as the boss of here. If you get the job, are you going to accept it?" he asked.
"I don't know" Geet answered honestly. She didn't know, she had previously thought of saying she had not gotten the job and wanted to apply elsewhere. But what if she was offered the job, then what?
Maan nodded appreciating her honesty, but then recalled the lie she'd already spouted out to Adi. He glanced down at his watch then looked at Geet.
"Are you doing anything for the rest of the day?"
"No, I was just planning to go straight home. It's nearly lunch time as well so I'm hungry" she said hoping he'd get the hint and relieve her so she can grab something to eat.
"Would you go out to lunch with me?" Maan asked given the opportunity with her choice of words.
"What?" Geet furrowed her brows looking stunned.
"I wanted to speak to you... away from everyone at home" he explained.
Curious to hear what he wanted to say, she agreed. Maan told her to head downstairs and get into the car whilst he left a message with Adi and Sasha.
Maan asked Sasha to conduct the digital conference with a client that was due in 15 minutes which she'd gladly been happy to accept in return for his smile and thanks of appreciation. He then passed the documents to Adi that Geet had completed and told Adi he will be out of the office for the next hour and asked him to handle anything that comes up.
After he'd ensured things were in place and his office was going to continue running smoothly in his absence he walked out and climbed into the back.
Geet, this time had sat at the back.
"Sir, where would you like to go?" Sandeep questioned.
"Take us to Jetlani's" Maan said.
