Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Maan worked from home the rest of the day, he had notforgotten his conversation with this brother this morning. He shook his headand wondered why the heck was his brother even working in a law firm if hecould not handle their elderly grandmother.
Dev had called him to inform that their dear grandmotherwanted him to stay at home this week and keep Geet occupied. Maan had flatlyrefused and Dadima had started emotionally crying in the background. Dev had toleave the room on her hysterical crying and told Maan to just listen. Maan hadrefused and told his brother to handle dadima and questioned his usefulness atbeing with Dadima. Dev had taunted Maan teasingly which only angered him whichled to the pounded fist on the table.
Maan could not just take a week off on the say so of hisgrandmother, there was too much to do and his presence was required at theupcoming meetings which was with some of his long standing business clients.
He stopped tapping at his keyboard as he recalled thelunch he had shared with Geet, he smirked at her thoughts of wanting him towork in the kitchen.
He shook of his thoughts about Geet and focused on thescreen before him. He wrapped up at 6pm feeling the pants of hunger stirringwithin and left his home office.
"Nakul, set up the table. I'm coming" Maancalled out then headed upstairs.
"Geet madam, sir mujhe daantenge" he pleadedwhen Geet blocked his way.
"Bahar jao, ya japan jao! You're not touchinganything today, I want to see if his hands fall off by grabbing himself a plateof his own" she told him firmly.
"Geet madam, sir aap ko daatenge aur mujhe naukri senikhal denge" he tried to reason.
Geet was having none of it, "Out" she pointedto the back, when he didn't move she held onto his arm and led him outside thenlocked the door warning him not to return.
Maan had quickly changed out of office clothes andsettled for his cuffed black jogging pants and a casual t-shirt.
He came downstairs and halted, "yeh khana kyun nahilagaya" he muttered angrily. He stalked over to the kitchen yelling, "Nakul".
He looked around and his eyes zeroed in on Geet leaningcasually against the counter.
"Nakul nahi hai" she informed.
"Where has he gone? Uska toh main..."
"Bhook lagi hai? Khana tayyar hai, aap khud lelijiye na?" she gestured.
Maan eyed her for a second and realisation dawned on him,"Where have you sent him?"
"Japan" Geet smiled. "Waise khana bohutaccha hain" she praised forking some pasta and ate cheerfully.
"I'm not playing games, Geet" Maan told hercrossing his arms. "Where is he?"
"Maan, all you have to do is walk there, grab aplate, plate up and reheat in the microwave. There's salad in the fridge aswell" she pointed.
"There's a time for your stupidity challenges, I'mtired and hungry. When you've worked as hard and such long hours, we'll see howmuch housework appeals to you" he snapped and stormed out of the kitchen.
Geet swallowed noisily immediately regretting it, sheunlocked the back door quickly letting Nakul in and he hurried in warming thefood.
"Nakul, woh itna gussa kyun hogaye? Main tho basainwayi..." she trailed.
"Maan sir kaafi hungry ho jaate hai" heexplained, "woh kaam ke saat saat construction site jaake madad karte hai.Woh bahut laborious job haina" he added. "Isi liye woh gussa kartehain jab khana waqt par ready nahi hota".
Geet cursed herself inwardly. She concluded it wasn't herfault, it's his. He didn't exactly say anything about how tiring his job is.
"Main leti hoon" Geet told Nakul and grabbed aplate, she packed the plate with pasta and added the salad at the side. Afterthat she grabbed a glass of water and went in search for Maan. From Nakul'ssuggestion she found Maan angrily typing on his laptop.
He distracted himself from the hunger pangs, exercisingwould not exhaust him, it would make him even more hungry.
So he decided to work, he tapped the keyboard lettersmore harshly than ever.
He looked up hearing the door open and saw Geet enteringwith a plate of food and glass of water.
"Woh... I'm sorry" Geet apologised.
"Leave me alone, Geet. I'm not hungry" heresponded sternly, his eyes burning into the screen. He wasn't even sure whathe was even typing anymore.
"Nahi, I feel so bad. I didn't realise about yourwork" she walked around placing the glass down and held out the plate.
Maan shoved his chair back and twisted looking up at her,"Just leave me" he raised his voice. Seeing that she wasn't moving,he gripped onto the arms to stand when she suddenly planted herself on his lap.
Geet panicked seeing him rising and she done what she sawfit considering she held a plate of food.
"Geet, get off my lap" Maan yelled.
"Nahi, pehle aap khaiyye" she pointed to theplate. He turned his head away, he would have grabbed her and shoved her butholding the plate she would most probably soil him and herself.
Geet shifted unbeknown to her, she had stirred somethingin Maan with her innocent shifting in making herself comfortable.
"Maan, look it's so delicious" she said forkingsome pasta and popped it into her mouth licking her lips. His eyes lingered onher lips for a tad too long and he cleared his throat realising he was staring.
"Maan please" Geet placed the plate down andrested her arm around his neck unaware of the effect she was having on Maan. "Ididn't realise and I'd done a mistake, I just... you know it's been a monthsince we married that we have managed a conversation..." she trailed.
"Okay" he said, he wanted her off his lap andhoped she doesn't notice anything. Her closeness, the softness of her warmbreath tugged at something and he found his body reacting unwittingly. Geetstood by the side making sure he grabbed the plate and started eating, shesmiled satisfied and walked off pleased with herself.
Maan had noticed her smiling so widely, such a smallthing made her so happy he thought inwardly and continued to eat hungrily.
He'd made a call to Nakul and asked for second helping, after he'd finished Nakul returned to clear the plates away and left a slice ofcake for Maan.
"Cake?" Maan inquired. "Why didn't youtell me before? I wouldn't have eaten twice"
"Geet madam ne todi der pehle banaye hai" Nakulinformed.
"Side main rakh do, main baad mein khalunga" hetold Nakul.
When Nakul returned with the cake, Geet's smile hadfallen and before Nakul could tell her what Maan had said she walked offcursing saru.
The next couple of days passed in a steady routine, Maanand Geet had eaten breakfast together. It was mostly silent, but Maan noted howGeet interacted with the staff even whilst she was eating away.
After Maan left to work, Geet met up with her friends andspent the day with them. Following the recent happenings, she'd asked Nakul ifhe could spare someone to drive her and be there. He appointed Mohan as Sandeepwas already on Maan's beck and call.
Mohan religiously ensured to keep an eye out for Geet, hesmiled when she'd always hug her friends and joined him at the front and yappedcheerfully with him. She didn't make him feel like just a driver, she treatedhim with respect and seemed interested and was quite easy going.
"Finally you have answered" Dadima mockinglysighed in relief.
"Kya baat hai dadima?" he asked entering hisoffice and closing the door.
"Maan, Geet has a break of two weeks and she'slooking for a part time job" she informed. "I told her that you'd beable to appoint her in your finance department" she said.
"And why would you say such a thing?" he archedhis brows even though she could not see it, Dadima knew.
"Because I'm your grandmother, you wouldn't want herworking for your rival company would you? It's only part time, and maybecontinuing to be part time because after her holidays she's only going for 3days to college" she said. "Maan, I'll be very stressed if she goesto another company. I don't know how they're going to treat her and would theybe giving her a platform to shine?"
He sighed and said, "she's only getting aninterview, if she doesn't get hired then she's not working".
"Okay, fine" Dadima agreed. She grinned andtold him she loved him and cut the call.
That evening, Maan returned and found Geet playing ludowith Chanda, Nakul and Mohan. Sandeep smirked shaking his head, "Ab Nakulka band bajega" he thought to himself.
"What are you doing?" Maan asked advancingtowards them, they were all settled on the hall room mat with their legscrossed. He would never have sat on the mat even if it was the cleanest place.
The staff were quick on their feet and hurried out.
"Hey, we didn't finish our game" Geet calledout and narrowed her eyes, "Why do you have to come in like a storm andruin everything?" she swiped her hands across the coloured figures inanger and stood hurrying up the stairs. Maan blanched in surprise, he had onlyasked what they were doing, he didn't say anything. He wasn't even angry.
Kuch kahan bhi nahimadam gussa hogayi he rolled his eyes and told Sandeep to clear the floorand headed upstairs.
Geet paced the bedroom floor angrily, she fisted herhands by her sides cursing her monthly painful visitor and Maan.
Today she had been unable to sit properly, Misha had goneout of town, Ryan wasn't available nor was Yash so she had been stuck at home. She didn't know anyone else in Delhi other than her friends. With Dadima andNaintara gone, she didn't have anyone to talk to either except the staff.
When they agreed to indulge her in a game of ludo, shehad leaped excitedly. Nakul had noticed how bored Geet had seemed throughoutthe day and agreed to a game as they had finished their work.
It had been a month, just over a little month since theymarried and they barely interacted. It was starting to affect her, it made hermore emotional now that she was on her periods. A month may not seem like along time to some, but for Geet it did. She had slept on the same bed as herhusband for the past month, like it had become a duty Maan plonked a line ofcushions between them every night. They didn't even make the smallestconversation.
How does one live like complete strangers?
Being a woman from a loving and affectionate family, shehad seen her parents love and felt it whenever she'd look between them. Shedreamed of the Prince Charming who'd love her for who she is, who'd accept heras she is, she dreamed of date nights, sleep ins, lazy making out sessions butas days passed she had begun to realise it was not going to be with Maan. Hedidn't like her, it seemed like he just tolerated her because of hisgrandmother.
Maan entered the bedroom and found Geet sat on the edgeof their bed staring off blankly.
"I don't understand why you're upset" Maanclosed the door and looked genuinely confused. "I only asked what you weredoing".
"Given your intelligence, I'd have assumed you wouldknow" Geet stood rolling her eyes and stalked off onto the balcony.
Maan had gotten pissed off, here he was trying to figureout why she'd become furious and she was insulting him.
"What's your problem, Geet?" he stepped outsidefacing her.
"What do you think?" she crossed her arms.
Maan narrowed his eyes at her, "I can't do thiscrap, I don't have time to put up with your attitude. Do whatever you want"he threw his arms up in anger and walked away.
Geet looked at his retreating back questioning as to whatshe was even doing here. Why had she even agreed to marry Maan Saru Khurana!
