Chapter 15
next part - unbreak my heart
Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me
Unbreak my heart
.....................
Take back that sad word good-bye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don't leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can't forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me
Ohh, oh
Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me
Unbreak my
Unbreak my heart, oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Unbreak my heart
Sweet darlin'
Without you I just can't go on
Can't go on .......
…………The press raced after her but paused …..at the doorway as they saw her state. She stumbled outside unseeingly, her feet dragged over the tiled floor in front of the hotel, she had stepped in barely hours ago floating on the clouds. Now she barely managed to reach her car, paused momentarily feeling the whole place swaying before her eyes. She closed her eyes briefly, not even feeling the tears. Putting both her palms on the door of the car, braced herself with great difficulty and finally managed to yank open the door and push herself in. Her head fell back, her lips parted as her starved lungs tried to get in some breathe.
Veer was running out of the house as he just managed to catch the news on the way home. He informed everybody. Kaajjal was unconscious in the car. Veer carried her inside the house and to her room. Panna Chhachi called for the doctor. The doctor came quickly. Over the anxious faces he said," She is in deep shock. I have sedated her. Can someone stay with her tonite." Payal came forward," I will Doctor." Her face was pale, a strange expression on her face almost like fear combined with knowledge. She sat at Kaajjals side after everybody had left, her eyes thoughtful.
Dev looked at the special cell he had been brought into for questioning. The 2 special detectives from Scotland read him out the charges. One of them introduced him as Sergeant Samuel O'Connor. There was a flicker in Devs eyes, almost wry," A Jewish name Sir." There was a surprised flicker in the officers eyes as he perched on the edge of the table opp Dev," Yes, my mother was Jewish. So Mr. Dev isnt it (pronouncing it as Dave) – what is a respectable businessman like yourself doing with drugs and guns." His voice was friendly but Dev wasn't fooled. He said nothing. "Silence wont help your case – the charges are very serious. Drugs trafficking, guns which have been used in the recent terror attacks, the murdered girl is on the list of suspects who attacked the Edinburgh airport last week. So lets start from the begining you said….." it went on and on, like a repeatedly without pause - they both came at him sometimes apiece sometimes together.. But Dev was made of steel that nite, a part of him had detached from the torture, so far they had refrained from using any physical force.
But they were specialised in all forms of mental and emotional grilling of the highest grade. 6 hours later after they left him, Dev's head was almost leaning on the table weakly, his mind had gone numb, their voices playing on his consciousness like a record. But only one word kept him sane – Kaajjal, I love you. He kept repeating it over and over again, till he lost consciousness.
Kaajjal woke up with a scream" Devvvvvv……",. She was trembling, sweat streaming down her face. Payal woke up with a start and ran to her side. Holding her arms firmly, Kaju was staring ahead her mind locked in blind terror – she kept repeating Dev….Dev….Payal rocked her gently, softly murmuring into her ears – Shhhhhhhhh…..he is alright….dont worry…nothing will happen to him….shhhhhh….try and get some rest…..Kaajjal….Gannu Bhaiyya is with him….." Gannu Bhaiyya, those two magic words, seemed to have some effect in her numbed state. Kaajjal slowly turned to look at Payal her eyes wide with fear and shock. "Payal ….they took Devvv….away….mere Dev,,,,,ko lekhar gaye Payal….Devvv……"she shook Payals arms helplessly. "Why….why…Payal…why…..kyun mere Dev…ko lekhar…gaye…" Tears began flowing…..down her eyes, her fingers over her mouth as the sobs came….she whispered "why….why…." her eyes touched on Gannu Bhaiyyas Statue and she pushed Payals hands away, and swung her feet out. Slowly walking over to him, she stared at his silent image. Then sunk to her knees her hands helplessly in front of her "G….g…g..Gannu….Bh…bhaiyya…." She broke down….. sobs racking her body. "Ky…ky….kyun ….Gannu…b..b..bhaiyya….kyun….mere Dev….ko.lekhar…gaye….Devvvv…."….each sob gutted from the depths of her soul….
Payal was trying to fight her own tears, biting her lip not even aware she had cut it. She looked away in helplessness, as she tried to get hold of her own emotions, knowing exactly what Kaju was going thru. She stood up and resolutely went to Kaju who had her head at Gannu Bhaiyyas feet, her sobs washing the altar non-stop. Squeezing her arm," I know who did it – Kaajjal." Kaajjal didn't respond immediately. Kneeling down Payal said firmly, her voice taut with emotion," Shivansh Kapoor is behind all this. Dev has been framed by him." Kaajjal froze with shock – what.
Slowly she lifted her head. Had she heard correctly – she looked at Gannu Bhaiyya, who was still his old impassive self and then turned to look at Payal in disbelief – What did you say….it was a whisper. Payal sighed deeply and unable to meet her eyes," Shivansh Kapoor is my Ex-husband – Kaajjal. He is behind all this". Kaajjal eyes were wide, her lips trembled. She tried to speak but no words came. She slowly lifted her hands to hold Payals," Pa…P…Payal….what did you say……" Payal looked at her this time unafraid," Kaajjal you will need to brace yourself for what I am going to tell you – for it is very ugly."
It started 5years ago – Payal was a medical Student at Lady Hardingale Medical College in delhi. Shivansh was the son of the Local MLA. Fast cars, wine and woman had always been his weakness. In those days, he was strongly attracted to Payal who constantly gave him the cold shoulder. That irked him a lot. Payal who was a gold medallist, was also on scholarship. She didn't have his riches to flash to around nor the time. She became a challenge to him slowly an obsession which at the time a young Payal didn't realise. He wanted to possess her at all costs, as she was determined to resist him come what may.
" Then he did what people like him do – in second year of her college, he had me trapped after I had spent a late evening doing my thesis in the library. " she paused, her throat worked hard….with the effort of trying to recall the horror of it all…." I was raped…Kaajjal. There was no one to hear my screams, nor come to my help." Despite her current predicament Kaajjal was horrified, for a moment her own grief paling in comparison. Payal looked at her bleakly," I reported the matter to the police – they made me a laughing stock. My name was plastered all over newspapers, ….I just wanted to die, then. My father had a stroke when he heard of it. So I coudnt even find comfort in death as I had to look after him." She paused then added bitterly, "But Shivansh was untouchable. Whatever he did or didn't do, I suffered the consequences." And it didn't stop there. She discovered she was pregnant. She decided to have an abortion and he came to hear of it.
He pleaded with her not to abort. That's when she saw another side to him. It was really weird. He wanted the baby and came to her with the marriage proposal. To date she never really understood that action. she had no choice , in the end gave in. Shame, social and family pressure, the fact that her father mental and physical health was at stake, she agreed to marry him. For eight months, he doted on her, the perfect husband to the outside world, even if a part of her was already dead. She went thru the motions inthe farce of her marriage. The baby died at premature birth, despite her best care, for she did love the unborn child. That sent him over the brink. He thought she had killed it somehow out of spite. That's when he began to hate her. Payal concluded at that point there was some mental illness somewhere. But he refused to let her go, now that the only bond that they had was also gone. And he began torturing her in every way he could think of. She hated herself all those years, and in her weaker moments, thought of ways to kill herself. And this went on for 3 years.
He would abuse her physically sometimes and there was the parade of cheap women he brought home to torment her with, not that she cared. She however had one solace, the only thing which probably kept her going - her job which by some miracle he let her keep. After the marriage people had forgotten the scandal and she led a respectable life outwardly, working at a renowned private hospital. Then she found a way to be rid of him. She told Kaajjal how she rigged her own death with a fellow doctors help and escaped two years ago. Then she told Kaajjal how past 2 weeks she has been receiving these phone calls.
She knew Shivansh like her own shadow and her heart knew it was him, even if he hadn't made any move to contact her. Kaajjal sat there pale with horror. She was shaking like a leaf. Payal sighed deeply vaguely wondering how did she manage to cry when all her tears had dried up years ago. Kaajjal suddenly hugged her with a soft sob," Ohhh…P..P…ayal..I sorry…so…sorry"…Payal said to her softly", Kaajjal, please listen to me carefully - we need to keep our heads together, on this. Not a word to anyone, not even Veer or Panna Chhachi….will you promise". Kaajjal nodded, wordlessly, Payals words hadn't even sunk in yet. All she could think was of Dev.
After that 6 hours of Marathon questioning, they didn't trouble him after. They made arrangements to take him back to London for further questioning. He was in shirt and his jacket lay there on the dusty floor. He picked up, his eyes dark with the memory of yesterday. His lips twisted bitterly, the anger , the hatred welling in chest like red hot Lava rumbling from the depths of a dormant volcano…he threw his jacket away with such force that it hit the earthern pot (that was placed for drinking water) in the corner and sent it toppling down. The constable came running to him, but one look at his eyes shrunk back, swallowed and took his seat.
Dev stumbled towards the bars and clenched them, till his knuckles were white, his face pale and sweating – I swear to God, I would break these bars, each one of them to come to you Kaajjal – but dammit I cant…dammit…I cant…..he clenched his fists and banged them helplessly on the bars, sinking to his knees slowly. "Kaajjal….kaajjal…oh…dammit…..Kaajjal", he sobbed, his slender frame quivering, uncontrollably.
