Sunsets
Satyavati watched as the waves crashed against the shore. The sky was a beautiful shade of red and purple. But she was captivated by her fiancee, standing perfectly still, watching the birds return to their homes, the setting sun providing a beautiful orange background.
"What are you thinking about?"
"The sea," Byomkesh answered, infuriating her. She glared at him, but her anger lowered when he grinned at her.
"Can I ask you something?"
He nodded, but Satyavati could hear the wheels turning in his head.
"What are we doing here?" They had traveled from Calcutta to Mandarmani just in time for the sunset, but now, Byomkesh was silent as if contemplating his next steps.
"I got a letter this morning. It had your photograph with blood stains on it."
She looked at him curiously. She was hoping he would laugh it off. But his solemn eyes looked back at her.
"Yang Guang."
"He died," she whispered. "You are lying. You are wrong!"
But she knew he wasn't. He was never wrong. Someone smarter than him could mislead him, but he couldn't be wrong.
Suddenly, the sky went darker, and the saltiness in the air became stifling. The soft caw of birds felt like sirens of warning to her. Even nature seemed to have sensed the impending doom.
