PART-23

"Just give me two minutes Darling. I am in shower."

"Okay I am waiting." She waited for him in his bedroom.

She could smell the strong, intoxicating aroma of his shower gel. He picked up his photograph from the side table and lied down on the bed adoring it. He was one of the most good-looking men she had come across.

"Can you please hurry up? I am getting bored." She shouted.

"Just coming."

She wasn't just bored but she was dying to be with him. She was getting restless and that could be seen over her face. She kept the photograph back in its place. She paced around to and fro. She was making frantic attempts to curb her restlessness. She again came back to the bed. This time she started to open the drawers of his side table. There were some odd files and nothing else. In the second drawer something caught her attention. It was a blue file that wasn't even marked. She hadn't seen that file before. As she took the file out a CD fell out from it. She picked it up and opened the file. She could not believe her eyes. That was the last thing she believed she could find with Rajveer. As she turned the pages, her face lost its color. Her heartbeats had increased abnormally and there was a rage mounting inside her. She hurriedly closed the file and kept it back.

She suddenly felt a strong grip on her arms. He hid his face in her hair. He bit her on her neck and turned her towards himself.

"I thought you won't come tonight sweetheart." Saying this he kissed her on her lips. He tenderly took them in and tried to deepen the kiss but to his surprise she didn't respond.

"What's wrong with you Naina?"

He noticed that there were no traces of that restlessness and affection on her face. It was blank.

"Naina are you alright?"

She pushed him aside and went straight to the table against the wall behind him. She picked up the knife from the fruit bowl kept on that table.

"What do you think you are doing?" He yelled at her.

"What did you do with all the proofs that Huda collected against me?"

"Have you lost it or what? Didn't I tell you I have already destroyed them?"

"You were lying and you are still lying."

"What nonsense... Naina you have lost it completely."

"No one can cheat me... You get that... No one... Not even you."

Saying this she rushed towards him and stabbed him with the knife.

"You B****"

He was bleeding... badly. But that was what she exactly wanted. Naina's anger was shooting up. She stabbed him again... and again.... and again until he dropped on the floor, lifeless.

She calmed down only after she saw him dead. She fell down on her knees.... weak and shattered. She was shivering.

"Why did you do this Raj?"

She sat there next to him for a while staring at that lifeless body and all the blood on and around him.

She got up and took out that file. She removed all the fingerprints and returned to her quarter.

She locked herself in the bathroom and threw the file and the knife in a corner. She opened the shower and stood under its cold water on that freezing night.

It was not the first time that she had killed someone. But it was the first time that it was not a cold blooded murder. It wasn't a murder of a person who was as good as non-existent for her. She had killed the man she loved. For the first time she realized how it feels to be betrayed by someone you love so much. She realized how Huda must have felt when she killed him. It was a terrible feeling that was tearing her apart.

She felt like crying and she did. It had been really long for her to have cried.... deep from her heart. Long enough to have easily faded from her memory. She believed she was too strong and heartless to cry. All she remembered was that she has cried only to make others weak and to gain their sympathy. Her tears were nothing more than a weapon that she used to win over others. Just now she realized how sore crying feels. But gradually her tears were making her feel better and lighter.

The cold water was numbing her senses. It had a soothing effect on her. After a while she could not feel anything. All the blood from her clothes and the pain from her heart washed away with water. But deep down in her heart a guilt was cropping up.

"Captain Naina Singh, we want your statement." She jerked out of her thoughts as she heard the voice of an official of the army police.

30 hours had passed but Alekh hadn't returned. On the instructions of Lieutenant Colonel Prassana, she was taken into the custody. She had to wait for Alekh. She could not give any statement before he returns.

Without speaking even a single word she put her head down on the table and closed her eyes. Within a few seconds she was again thinking about that night. She could not get over it... no matter how hard she tried.

She stopped her car in a secluded area. She got down carrying a bag. It had a few papers, some wet clothes with blood stains, a knife and a CD.

She put those clothes and papers on the roadside and poured some liquor over it and set it to fire. At some distance she dug a small pit and buried the knife and CD inside it. All the proofs against her were destroyed and now she was sure about it.

She looked at the fire and whispered to herself,

"All your efforts to secure proofs against me have been wasted Raj.... There's nothing against me now. I am a free bird."
