CHAPTER 12
"Yes sir? You called for us? We brought Angad's brother, Kartik along with us." Kripa beamed. She held onto Angad's arm. Any person could see the radiance illuminating out of her, just created by Angad's presence. Muskaan smiled at the cute couple.
"Mr. Khanna…"
Angad and Kartik both answered, "Yes?" They looked at each other and said at the same time, "He was talking to me!" Kripa laughed at their stupidity. "Stop answering for me!" They both sighed.
"Mr. Angad Khanna," ACP clarified. Angad looked at Kartik with an I-told-you-so look.
"Yes?"
"Do you know any person linked to Mr. Prithvi or you, for that matter that owns a Smith & Wesson Model 910 revolver?"
"A gun? Not that I know of…Kartik, you know anyone?" He shrugged.
"Nope. No one I know of…why?" Kartik asked
"It's the murder weapon, and a gun shop near Versova W. that someone in your family bought that same gun from…" Daya told.
"Only person related to our home that owns a gun, are our security. But all of them get their guns from Behl and Sons…" Kartik stated, cut off by the ACP
"Which is in Juhu. Were you aware they have a branch in W. Versova, the store where we found the records?" finished the ACP.
"Maybe you should question our security. You have our full cooperation, drop by whenever you need to…" Angad tried to smile looking at Abhijeet, but his fist clenched remembering him punching him.
"By the way," Abhijeet saw his clenched fist, "You and Ms. Sharma's name has been cleared from the suspect list. So I'm very sorry for…"
"Beating me up?" Angad laughed.
"Yeah that." Abhijeet said turning red of embarrassment.
"Don't worry man, he beats us up too." Daya laughed. Everyone but Abhijeet laughed, even ACP.
"Ms. Sharma," Fredrick said. "Having a bad temper is a terrible thing. Do you and Mr. Angad ever have trouble with that?" Fredrick was infamous for asking irrelevant but often times brilliant questions.
"Yes!" Both Angad and Kripa replied at once, Muskaan and Daya laughed at them. They knew how that felt.
"By the way, you look quite beautiful today, Ms Kripa. Anything special?" asked Fredrick, another dumb question thought the others.
"No, just wanted to look se-" She was nudged in the leg by Angad, she smiled while he gulped.
(thinking) "I hope to god, she doesn't explain…" thought Angad
"Just wanted to look presentable. Me and Angad were going to go out tonight." She winked at Angad. He sighed relief.
"Oh well, all three of you probably have plans for the rest of the night, so you're free to go." Smiled the ACP. Even his grin was stern, it reminded her of how her mother had that quality, to stay strict through everything, never to go soft. That was her father's area of specialty, crumbling under pressure. Her face got serious: grief filled her eyes, everyone noticed.
"Um sure." She smiled again, it was a hollow one. "Let's go clubbing." She suggested, in a tone that seemed happy enough. "Any of you guys wanna come?" Her eyes hopeful, she turned to Muskaan and Daya. "If you don't have work."
"We don't. Do we?" she asked the ACP, taking Daya and Abhijeet arms in each arm. Her eyes were glistening like a child's. The ACP saw his child in Muskaan, after the death of his only son the members of the CID have been like his children. His heart went soft for a second as he sighed, "No, go have fun. But only you two. The rest of you I need." He smiled.
"Thank you sir."
"Hello? Hey Aali. Get Nikhil, Tanya, and Kartik…yeah yeah. We're going clubbing. Oh, Daya and Muskaan are coming with us too. Yeah them…okay cool." Kripa got off her phone. Angad offered his arm and Kripa linked hers through. Muskaan smiled at the gesture, not seeing Daya had his arm out for the same.
"Oh" she said quietly, she pecked him on the cheek.
The four entered a not-so-large club, flashing blue, purple, green lights greeted them through the door. The music was blasted that upon entrance, three of them felt their ears were to explode. Angad was perfectly at home though, 'figures' thought Kripa. She shook her head in disdain.
"What?" Angad shrugged. Kripa rolled her eyes at him, laughing at his oblivious nature. She went clubbing with Aaliya a couple of times, sometimes with Tanya too. They came to celebrate their singleness. She spotted Tanya with Kartik, and Aaliya with Nikhil on the other side of the club, near the bar…boy, singleness had sure gone down the drain. She laughed, Angad looked at her puzzled. He pulled her by the waist, closing in on her. She smiled.
"Anything funny?" Angad whispered.
"Yup. Your under-age sister standing with her boyfriend near the bar." She giggled, his expression melted, eyes dashing towards the bar. He sees a girl in a mini-skirt leaning up to kiss a guy. Without thinking, Angad yelled "YO!!!!"
Aaliya and Nikhil pulled away, looking at Angad. "Yeah bhai?"
"You drinking?" He said, glaring at Nikhil. Clearly, the question was directed toward Aaliya. She sighed, "No bhai…"
"Good…Go dance." Nikhil pulled her towards the dance floor. "NOT YOU!" He shouted. Nikhil backed away from Angad. Kripa intervened, "Go ahead Nikhil and Aaliya, don't mind him…You two know how he is." She faked a laugh. The two left reluctantly.
"I don't wanna imagine how you'll be with our daughter." She laughed.
"Daughter? Kripa…I didn't do anything, I swear. I'll care for the baby though…Just tell me who's the father." Angad said, suddenly getting serious. She hit his arm.
"OH NO! DON'T TELL ME ITS KARTIK!!!!" He screamed. He absolutely loved this game.
"What? Someone said my name!?" Kartik said, showing up with two glasses filled with amber colored liquid.
"You got her pregnant?!?!?!" Angad said, waving his fist in the air.
"Who? Tanya, no way man…We've only been going out for like…a couple of months now." He said clarifying, he calmly took a sip out of one of the glasses.
"Kripa!!!" He pretended to cry.
"What?" Tanya arrived upon hearing the commotion, and left upon hearing the mock news. She stormed off, stepping on Kartik's foot.
"OW! What? NO!...TANYA…" He said hopping after her. He was a sight to see, a glass in each hand, hopping on one foot, attempting to hold the toe of the other. "Dumb stilettos," He murmured under his breath, following Tanya at her heels.
"That was NOT funny." Kripa said fuming. She saw it was all out of playfulness. They understood that about each other, they could sense the other's emotion. She remember the joke she and Kartik played on Angad upon returning from jail, this was probably his lame idea of vengeance.
"Yes, it was…HAHA…did you see Kartik….HAHAH…and TANYA…HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…her face….his foot….oh my god." He stopped laughing, seeing Kripa's seemingly genuine anger.
"Was that your lame excuse of a prank? Cuz that was sheer stupidity. All your jokes on how I'll cheat on you…Real funny, isn't it?" her eyes welled, "It's not. If you don't trust me, you can tell me without humiliating me like that…" Tears streamed down her face. She stormed away to the bathroom. If she knew him well enough, Angad was sure to follow her. She stepped in the washroom, locking herself in the third stall. She waited Angad's arrival. Till then, she didn't wipe her tears, instead she wept fresh ones.
"Kripa? Hey I'm sorry…I trust you. You know that." He sounded concerned.
She came out of the stall, a tempest still in her eyes. "Do you know how loud you were, out three? Everyone out there probably thinks I'm some slut having another man's baby…You're the only one I love and you're over here acting a fool…and…and…" She gasped for air.
Angad held her. He felt genuinely terrible for making her cry, he hated tears. No, he didn't have a problem with tears…it was HER tears he hated. He loved the way her lips curled upwards at the dumb stuff he did to make her laugh. It didn't work sometimes, and then other times it ended up like this. She pushed him away.
"NO! I don't want any of that. Don't try and hold me. In THIS relationship, if there is anyone that will cheat…it will be you. We both know how you can't keep your hands off of girls. I don't let you touch me! If that bothers you, leave already! Don't hide your insecurities like…like THAT!" She pointed to the door. At this point, Angad bust out laughing, he couldn't help it anymore.
"ANGAD!" She screamed, whiningly. He came and kissed the peak of her head. He pulled her into embrace.
"When did you figure it out?" She asked him, playing with his hands. Sometimes she got to hate how much they both knew each other.
"I knew the whole time, I wanted to see how long you'd last." Angad laughed heartily. His voice was deep, and raspy when he drank. He smelt of liquor.
"I did good?" Kripa asked looking him square in the eye.
"Eh. Okay. Still can't play the PLAYER." He said boastingly. It was true, no matter how hard she ever tried at everything, Angad always won. Except studies, that was her specialty. And she gave him a run for his money in the arts: whether it is art, music, acting, dancing, or writing…they were equal. Kripa hated being dominated by a male, a pacifist by nature but a feminist by choice she loved winning…especially when the competition was a chauvinist…then victory was all the more sweeter. And that was what Angad was, he may have been a new-ager, a guy of the 21st century but he still carried the misconception that men were superior. Kripa always loved clearing that misconception.
"I will…You won't know when but I will." She mumbled, they were close enough for him to hear. She knew he had. She had unfortunately special relationships with male chauvinists. Prithvi was one; only difference was Angad would never hit her to prove himself right…Prithvi never hesitated. A tear escaped her eye as she fingered the scar on her wrist. Prithvi had slashed her there with a kitchen knife, called 911 on her, and kept her in suicide counseling for half a year. She often wondered how many girls he must've been with while she was in that group home. She let another tear drop.
Angad didn't bother to say anything. It was of no use. He knew she was thinking of Prithvi, though he was dead Kripa still had fear in her eyes. It made Angad mad. He wished silently he could've done the honors to putting an end to Prithvi. Angad frowned at her wrist. He knew Kripa was far too strong for that, fire filled his eyes as he thought all the pains he must've inflicted on this poor, frail girl that lay in his arms. He wondered how anyone could be so happy and so sad all at once. Aaliya walked into the washroom past them and began to fix her hair in the mirror. She saw their reflection behind her.
"Kripa...Bhai? What the hell, this is the girls bathroom!" Aaliya exclaimed at Kripa laying in his arms, on the sofa near the door.
"What? This isn't my room? Where am I? Who are you?" Angad said smartly, he looked around confused like a deer in the headlights. Kripa hit his arm, this time hard.
"OW! I'm leaving okay? But you're coming too? Kay?" He said pulling her up with him. She leaned upward, his large 6 foot frame hovered over her petite 5 something, she kissed him and the kiss got deeper before a creeped out Aaliya yelled, "GUYS!" They pulled away smiling, his kiss had that affect on her. "Angad?" She said suddenly confused.
"Yes…" He said mischievously.
"Give me my gum back!!!" She said angrily.
"Ugh, get it back later…" He winked at her. She smiled at him.
"EW! Okay guys, my innocence…is like…melting. So you guys should really leave!!!" Aaliya said pushing the two out of the bathroom door. She closed the door behind them.
Aaliya flipped open her phone and dialed a number. "Hello...Yeah, I need that tape. From June 18… This is Aaliya Khanna! I can buy your whole department in a second. Understand? I don't know," She sounded annoyed, "Mail it to me or something…That is not my concern. I want it by tomorrow evening or all of you will be out of your jobs. No excuses!" She checked her hair quickly and exited the bathroom. Out of the stall came Muskaan with a puzzled expression on her face.
"June 18 is the night of the murder…What tape? Have we not questioned her yet? Iska to pata lagana padhega…Aakhir iss June 18 ko hua kya tha?" Muskaan questioned herself and left.
Within an hour, everything was back to "normal" when Angad's phone rang. It was only his mother. Kripa picked up, "Hello?"
"Hi beta, there are some people at the house, wanting to question our security…What is that about? Is everything okay? Is Angad okay?"
"Oh mummyji, he's fine. Here talk to him." She handed the phone to Angad as he shrugged, 'its your mom' she lip-synced. With a moment of epiphany, he took the phone.
"Hello Maa?...Yeah, it's the CID. they had a case involving a gun someone from our security might have bought. Nothing big." Angad sighed. He hated lying to her, but technically he was only hiding the truth.
"Acha beta. Teek hai. Have fun. Be home with your sister by 11."
"11 mom? We're gonna stay out until…"
"11 is fine…see you at home."
"Mom…11? But it's Frid…" Angad argued like a teenager.
"Angad Abhidev Khanna! Don't you backtalk me. We'll talk when you get home…at 11." She said sternly.
"Yes mom." He said defeated, he sighed flipping his phone shut. Kripa laughed at him. "Let me guess, she said Angad Abhidev Khanna don't you talk back to me!" She laughed on. He covered her mouth with his hand, "Don't ever say that out loud again…no one knows me real name here. I'd like to keep it that way Miss Kripa Avantika Sharma." She licked his palm, he didn't react. Mischief filled her eyes. He had been licked by her plenty of times; he reacted when he felt her front teeth biting through the mound of his hand.
"Ow! What are you? A friggin vampire?! Sounds right. Avantika the vampire." He laughed, sucking on his bleeding palm.
"Abhidev! At least I don't sound like some outsourced computer tech for Dell. 'Hello ma'am, I am Abhidev from Mumbai, how may I help you this fine day?'" She mocked his name in a heavy, foe Indian accent. Fake hurt was in his eyes as he clutched his heart, "That hurts! Kripa AVANTIKA Sharma!" He yelled.
"Angad ABHIDEV Khanna." She said yelling louder than he. She ran to the other side. He chased her through the club. Near the door stood a suspicious Muskaan, a bored Daya, a sore Kartik, an angry Tanya, a flirting Nikhil and Aaliya and there arrived breathless Angad and Kripa.
"Let's go…We've been waiting for you guys…Where were you?" asked Daya.
They both panted, breathless.
"Spare us," Aaliya said disgusted.
"None of that, little Ms Rated R. We were just…" Angad began to explain but saw everyone was too into leaving to care. He sighed and took out the car keys. Daya and Muskaan took their own jeep. Nikhil and Aaliya went with them. Angad drove his Lamborghini Guillado, Kripa sat beside him. Behind Angad sat Kartik with his fuming girlfriend. The poor guy spent the whole ride trying to pacify his angry girlfriend and he never gave up a chance to kick the driver's seat. Angad found it humorous, while Kripa was sorry for him. Angad was a pain; he pinched Kripa's side at stop lights and would pretend to gaze at her while she freaked out trying to convince him to look at the road. He was hopeless, she thought. Finally they got home. He glanced at his watch. Sh**, he thought, 12:46.
"We're a little late, aren't we?" Kartik said glancing at Aaliya and Angad. They nodded. Kripa was still living with them, so she was amused to watch them get a good scolding.
