Doors
“In the universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between, there are doors.” ~ William Blake
She had known there was love, she hadn’t known it wasn’t there to stay,
She had known there was trust, she hadn’t known it wasn’t unequivocal,
She had known she was important, she hadn’t known not more than an ego,
She had known explanations would be needed, she hadn't known assumptions would be made,
She had known they had hope, she hadn't known it was an illusion,
She had known it would hurt, she hadn't known it would crush,
She had known she would bruise, she hadn’t known she would crumble,
She had known words could give wounds of grief, she hadn’t known words could make those wounds bleed,
She had known she would live, she hadn’t known she would just exist,
She had known doors could open to a world of magic, she hadn’t known doors could close on your zeal for life.
“Often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us.” ~ Helen Keller
She lost a house, she didn’t see the home she found,
She lost a household, she didn't see the family she found,
She lost a husband, she didn't see the partner she found,
She lost a love, she didn't see the friendship she found,
She lost respect, she didn't see the honour she found,
She lost trust, she didn’t see the conviction she found,
She lost the dream, she didn’t see the ambitions she found,
She lost loyalty, she didn’t see the devotion she found,
She lost faith, she didn’t see the sincerity she found,
She lost the cage, she didn't see the freedom she found,
She lost gold, she didn’t see the gem she found.
“Sometimes, when you open the door to the past, what you confront is your destiny.” ~ Diane Setterfield
The door opened, again, and she waited,
For anger, but concern greeted her,
For questions, but reassurance greeted her,
For judgement, but trust greeted her,
For accusations, but faith greeted her,
For pain, but relief greeted her,
For drama, but understanding greeted her,
For fear, but hope greeted her,
For restlessness, but peace greeted her,
For trauma, but exhilaration greeted her,
For bitterness, but sweetness greeted her,
For the past, but the future greeted her,
And so, she ran… away from the clutches of her past, escaping her demons,
Fueled by promises of dreams, to embrace that which was her destiny.
“The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.” ~ Flora Whittemore
