Small Moments (A Devakshi FF)
It was just another
ordinary day. Drop Elena to college, Go to work, come back home, chat with ma,
Baba, Dada, Dadi and Elena, eat and sleep. Sonakshi hitched her bag higher up
on her shoulder and fought through the crowd full of cars and stopped her
scooty at the front of the line where the signal showed red. Just another day full of ordinary moments,
where she shut out her mind and stood in the midst of an overcrowded street
just hearing the faint outline of voices. There was no point listening to any
floating conversations as they mostly would be about the person's own lives. Or
probably not. She didn't care.
But then it happened.
She suddenly saw him
as she looked around through her helmet. Just his jet black hair caught her eye
first. Sitting in the car on her far right hand corner with his hands gripping
the steering wheels and looking straight ahead with a Bluetooth attached to his
left ear. He was wearing a grey suit jacket over a black shirt. Sonakshi leant
over a bit on her left to get a better look. Grey trousers and black shoes
visible from under the steering wheel completed his look. Even though his look
was quite ordinary, it mesmerized her. He had a girl of Elena's age sitting
beside him in the car listening to music through headphones.
"Arey Sona, kya kar
rahi hai. Marney ka irada hai kya. Seedhi hoke baith and scooty start kar"
Elena yelled from the backseat. She snapped out of her trance and looked in front
to see that the light was about to turn green. She must have not noticed what
Sona was looking at. Thank God, Sona thought," Nahin toh teasing ka to ant ho
nahin hota."
But before starting
the scooty, Sonakshi looked back towards him once again and at that exact
moment he smiled at something the person was saying to him on the phone. A
charming lopsided smile. And it almost stopped her heart. She wanted to wait
and watch him all day. She wanted to go there and make him acknowledge her
presence.
But she couldn't. With
such a large crowd of people in between them she could only sit helplessly and
stare. With great reluctance Sonakshi drove to Elena's college but she couldn't
get her mind off him. " Kaash mein ek baar aur ussey dekh paati" thought
Sonakshi dejectedly as Elena got down blabbering something about being late
again. But then the impossible happened. That same car Sonakshi had been
longing to see pulled up beside her scooty in the parking lot and out stepped
the man she had been yearning to see along with the girl.
Sonakshi by this time
had realized that these two were siblings. The young girl skipped out from the
car and walked towards the college gate passing Sonakshi's scooty. Elena had
long gone into the college and there was no reason for Sonakshi to wait there.
But that magnetic pull towards this man was not letting her move an inch!
As Sonakshi kept
staring at the man, who was oblivious to her, took of his shades and called out to
his sister "Nikki, college ke baad der mat karna. Seedhey ghar jana." But
Sonakshi paid no attention to that because the moment he took off his shades
Sona was presented with two beautiful brown eyes that she couldn't look away
from.
"Hey Bhagwaan" she
thought, "koi itna mesmerizing kaise ho sakta hai?"
Just then, Nikki, as
the man had called her, turned around and yelled " Haan Dev bhaiya, mein time
pe ghar pahunch jaungi" and ran inside. Dev. Such a nice name for such an
amazing man, thought Sona and started chanting Dev again and again in her mind.
She realized how stupid
she was acting and swiftly looked down and put on her helmet while giggling to
herself. Just then Dev noticed her quiet giggles and turned towards her. Sona
looked up to see looking at her and she froze. She knew she looked absolutely
ridiculous with her helmet halfway through her head and her mouth open like a
fish but nothing was making sense to her.
Dev smiled at the
crazy scooty girl, nodded his head and turned around to open the door and sit
in his car.
As Sona sat their
looking like an idiot, Dev drove off, while looking once or twice at the girl
on the scooty, through his rear-view mirror. "Kitni cute lag rahi hai yeh
ladki. Pagal hai bilkul" he thought before driving off to Ishwari
communications.
As Sona sat there
frozen in spot staring at the tiny speck of his car until it disappeared down
the road completely she realized that he was gone. The extraordinary moment
came to an end and she was sucked back into the same mundane, boring cycle of
life once again, hoping against hope that she gets to see
"her" Dev sometime somewhere again.
