Part 3
Sai left the room to grab dinner and both Virat and Sai had a quick and simple meal of daal-chawal and pickle with paapad. After getting some comfort food in her system, they both settled down in their balcony. It was a chilly night so Virat grabbed a comforter and wrapped both himself and Sai in it and gathered her close.
They both just stared up at the sky in a comfortable silence.
Virat knew Sai was processing her emotions and would talk when she was ready. All he needed to do was be there for her.
After a few minutes Sai broke the silence- I lost a patient today. He was only 40. He had TB meningitis but during his hospitalization he acquired multiple complications. And I keep thinking if there was anything I could have done..... Her voice choked up....as she left the rest unsaid....
Virat just rubbed her arms comfortingly
He knew it was hard to see death and dying in your line of work. He wasnt a medico but he could relate to this complex feeling - it was a mixture of grief due to the loss of life, of guilt or doubt at ones own abilities and also of the profession one is a part of, of frustration at not being able to prevent something despite ones best efforts....

Virat- Sai, you are a doctor. You have learnt certain skills and now that you are working, you are applying everything you have been trained for. As you become more experienced, you will polish your skills but ultimately there are certain things that are not in your control. The most you can do is work hard and in good faith. And I know meri Sai humesha aisa hi karegi.... apni taraf seh joh ban padega voh karegi. Aur mujhe tum par pura confidence hai ki tum humesha apne farz ke prati imaandaar ho aur aage bhi rahogi.
Sai- absorbed his words of wisdom as well as consolation.
Sai- thank you she whisperered.
Virat just tightened his arms around her in response.
They didnt say much else after that but those few words and the comfortable silence were all she needed to overcome a tough day at work.
