Priya was weirdly skittish tonight. It was not the first time her husband was out on a business trip, but she felt his absence acutely. The first day he left, she went about her day as normal but constantly thinking about what he’d be doing. He had messaged on the Kapoor WhatsApp group when he had landed and her heart ached a bit when no one else responded.
As she returned to her room, she idled her time away until her phone rang unexpectedly. It was Mr. Kapoor. She excitedly picked up the call before schooling her mind to behave. What followed was possibly the longest conversation they had ever had since they had been married. She really couldn’t say what it was about, she only knew that if felt familiar. There was no agenda and conversation flowed with ease.
For the next two weeks, Mr. Kapoor called her like clockwork at 7pm and they spoke. They always started the call formally and ended the call formally and their banter was sandwiched in between.
Today it was 9 pm and he hadn’t called yet. She assumed it was because he was stuck in meetings. While she knew she could call him or text him to check, she also recognised he hadn’t gone to London for a joyride and the negotiations with the investment banks, PEs and lawyers could take hours to sort out final details. She heard the excitement in his voice when he spoke about the acquisition over the last fortnight. He was generally excitable like an energiser bunny, but this seemed like it was special.
She was standing on the terrace when her phone buzzed with the familiar ringtone she had set for him. Before she could say hi, she heard him sigh, she could hear his tiredness in that one sigh.
“Priya….hi”
“Mr Kapoor, is everything fine?”
“It’s just that…I have some bad news”
“Mr Kapoor, is everything fine? Please tell me what has happened”. She repeated her question, with her panic rising this time.
“The work I left for is taking longer than expected. I won’t be able to return as planned. I’m going to be in London for a further 3 weeks.”
“Oh”
“Oh?”
“No it’s nothing....bus.."
"Hahahaa Priya...dont tell me that you'll miss me..."
"I will..."
There was an awkward silence that followed and neither side spoke for a few moments.
"Mera matlab hai ki main aapke gande jokes ko miss karoongi....main" she stuttered trying to recover from her sudden admission.
"Actually I would miss you too..."
"Would? did you mean will?"
"Nahi....I meant would. Agar main London mein hota, tum se door, toh. I would miss you too."
"Kya...main samjhi nahi .....did you head to another country?" she asked bewildered.
"Woh...turn around.."
She spun around and nearly dropped her phone in surprise. There he was standing, looking tired af but smiling and his blue eyes twinkling.
She couldn't control herself as she flung her arms around him and hugged him.
"Mr. Kapoor....what's the meaning of this, what is this charade?"
"Priya, Im so sorry. We signed yesterday and i took the chance to head back a day earlier. In between all of this I thought it would be great to prank you if I said I'd be late but then come early. But, I must say, i wish I had to actually stay longer"
"Why so?"
"Well, It would have given you a chance to miss me truly!"
She extracted herself from the hug and blushed hard but didnt drop her gaze.
"Ram......aap.....never mind, chaliye, let's have dinner"
His grin increased threefold as he followed her to dinner.
