It was dusk on the beach when the orange shade of sunset, tinted with a hint of purple, overshadowed the Earth, spreading over the entire sky. Orange color of the Sun, the symbol of fire, was kissing the blue, cold and peaceful water of the sea, just like true mates.
Since childhood, the beach had occupied a special existence in Zoya's heart. She had always been of the belief that all her sorrows would vanish with the sunset. But today was different. She was desperately waiting for him at the beach, but there was no sign of him.
Her eyes constantly admired the sunset for a while, and then her concentration shifted to the wet sand that emerged from beneath the heavy wave as it receded. She knelt down to mould a sandcastle and scratched AsYa on its main door, admiring it.
Suddenly, she felt a touch on her shoulder. How could she not realize it was him, her Asad? A smile crept on her lips as she embraced him, her hands still stained with wet sand.
"Zoya! I wanted to say something... something very important." He spoke in a low voice, looking down.
She laughed out loud. "What could be more important than our marriage?" She blushingly whispered in his ear, but he flinched in pain, as doesn't matter to him.
He faltered as he spoke. "Zoya I-I can't m-marry you." He closed his eyes and turned away from her.
She was flabbergasted. "Asad! Don't you dare to joke about this," she cried, unwilling to accept what he was saying. She yanked his arm fiercely, forcing him to face her, and clutched his collar in desperation.
Asad gripped her arms and shook her forcefully. "It's the truth, Zoya!"
She clenched her jaw, protesting, "Asad! I said, don't you?.."
He interrupted her, raising his voice. "It's not a joke, Zoya... this is the bloody truth... and you have to accept it!"
He harshly emphasized every word. She stood lifeless and still as a statue, fresh tears rolling from her eyes, dropping to the wet sand beneath her feet. She felt all her dreams slipping away from her like tightly fisted sand.
Just as Asad was leaving, she cried out, hatred lacing her voice. "What's the reason behind all this?"
Asad did not even bother to exchange a look. "Reason jaan kar kya karogi? My decision will not change."
She forced him to meet her eyes. "Haq hai mera janne ka!"
The frustrated Asad gulped a fresh lump formed in his throat, digging his nails on his fist Asad swallowed in frustration, his nails digging into his palm. "Kyuki shaadi usse ki jati hai jisse pyaar ho."
A fresh pool of tears flowed down her face, but Asad went on, mercilessly.
"And I had never loved you. Never! "
Every word was crystal clear, echoing in the atmosphere, stabbing at her heart.
Somehow she found her voice. "Then what about those feelings, we felt for each oth.."
He cut her off. "You might have had them. I never believed in love...it was...it was just an illusion..and I can't see it as LOVE...and to tie a knot with you...no way...!" He was speaking to her as if she were a stranger.
Rage welled up in her, her eyes blazing with wrath as she struck him hard on the face, her palm stinging at the impact. He looked stunned for a moment, and then he turned around and left. Zoya stood there motionless.
She stared down at the sandcastle she had made, which was now destroyed by the velocity of waves, just like the castle of her dreams, her joy and her love. The sky had now faded into the night, enveloping her in its darkness, and invading her soul.
The almighty has given always a peaceful feeling in the Sunset's presence. Literally, the sunset in her life, she being an aimless leaf of autumn crossed his path, when the colorful shades of memories started painting in front of her vision, her past.
