Epilogue
The soft sunlight entered through the window, and Rehaan opened his eyes to meet Hazel's brown eyes.
"Where is your mommy, bud? " He asked the golden retriever and rubbed his ear.
"Ahaana?" He called out and heard sounds from the washroom. He stepped in to see that Ahaana was bent over the toilet, hurling. He held her hair and clipped it to the back of her head. He ran his palm soothingly on her back.
"Why didn't you wake me up? " He asked as he helped her stand. She walked to the basin, her hand over her eight-month baby bump.
"Sorry, " She said and washed her face. Rehaan shook his head at his girlfriend's stupidity and helped her freshen up.
"What time is the gynec's appointment?"
"10 o'clock. So, I'll make some sandwiches for you, and we should get going. I'll stop at the cafe for some coffee. Can you feed Hazel till then, I am surprised he isn't following you around, to remind you that it's his breakfast time, " He said and the looked at the dog who was wagging his tail and looking at them expectantly.
"It's not fair that I can't have coffee," She whined and left the room, with Hazel following her, making Rehaan chuckle at the two.
As he made the sandwich, he thought of the last two years. After trying long distances for about two months, Rehaan had started searching for jobs in London, and after struggling for sometime, he had shifted to London. The two decided that they wouldn't get married so soon, Ahaana still recovering from the heartbreak of her past marriage and Rehaan still guilty about being a reason for the broken marriage. But when they got to know that Ahaana was two months pregnant, they decided to move in together but not get married.
Living with Ahaana was like being wrapped in a warm blanket after a long, tiring day. He couldn't help but look forward to going home and watching her work or just laze around. Ahaana, Hazel and him were like the family he had always wanted. The two shared every moment of her pregnancy, and when Ahaana had cried when the baby had kicked for the first time, thinking of the child she had aborted in the past, Rehaan had held her for the whole night, and the two had watched as it snowed with Hazel sleeping at their feet to keep them warm.
Sometimes, Rehaan wondered if it all was a dream and it would come crashing down. He would have these sudden urges of holding Ahaana and never letting her go, and his therapist told her that after losing Riya and all that happened between him and Ahaana, it was only natural for him to feel so anxious about the relationship.
"Which one?" Ahaana asked, breaking his trace. She was holding two dresses and frowning in confusion.
"Anything you wear makes you look good, baby," He said and walked to her.
"I want to wear the red one, but I look fat in it," she moaned and sat at the dining table, tossing the dresses on another chair.
"That's not true. I think you look great," Rehaan kneeled in front of her and kissed Ahaana.
"We can either continue this, or you can help me dress, and we can go to the doc,"
"I prefer the former, but our baby will hate me, so let's do the latter," He said, and she rolled her eyes.
He helped her stand. He stayed back, offering to pack the sandwiches for the drive and watched her go back to the room, and thought back to everything that had happened. Was it wrong, or was it right? He could never answer, but being with her felt right.
Maybe, in a parallel universe, Laila Raichand wouldn't plan on getting married to Anant, and hence, he would have had the chance to be with Ahaana without any drama, and it would have been right. Maybe, he would have never doubted Ahaana, which would have saved her relationship with Anant, and she would have never fallen for him, and it would have been right as he would push his feelings and try to move on with Vyoma. Maybe, they would never get caught and hide their feelings from Anant, or not to do anything about their feelings, even though, at that point of time Rehaan was done hiding, and it would have been right, even if their hearts would have been broken.
But now, she felt right, they felt right and that's what mattered.
