Chapter 3
'Over me?' Anjali asked dejectedly. Her wish that her brother would make everything alright and she could go back to living her perfect life was shattered in an instant. She looked at her brother again to see his gaze flicker between her and that woman and finally resting on her. She was still recovering from the shock that instead of consoling her, he had chosen to trust the other woman. It left a bitter taste in her mouth.
'This can be a misunderstanding. This is Khushi we're talking about.' Arnav beseeched wanting his sister to understand that she might have made a mistake. His mind was still reeling with all that was happening and he hoped against hope that it would soon clear up and turn out to be just a cruel prank. His sister's heartbroken face crushed his hopes in no time.
'Anjali bitiya, we should at least give Khushi bitiya a chance to explain.' Nani tried again, her heart breaking into a million pieces on seeing the siblings going against each other.
'For what Sasu Maa? So she can make up some story?' Manorma scoffed.
'Why isn't jeeja ji here too? Why is only Khushi being pointed at?' Arnav ignored the jibe his Mami threw and asked the most basic question that everyone seemed to have ignored till now.
'Because he's my husband.' Anjali stated like it was the most obvious answer.
'So? He can do no wrong?' Arnav retorted, his mind already getting a clear picture now. In a fit of rage, everyone had confronted Khushi about the alleged affair but failed to see the absence of Shyam or even think that he could be the one at fault. Although his heart pricked with the images of his jeeja ji treating his Di like a queen as he claimed, he still believed that it wasn't very difficult for the most romantic of men to stray, his own father being the prime example of that. The man's absence was confirming his theory further. But Khushi? On any day, he would have laughed at the imagination of his family claiming that Khushi seduced a man and that too a married one. She was simply not the type, that he was sure of.
'I can't believe that you're going against me? Your di?' Anjali's anguished whisper killed something inside him. He had never questioned her. She was his mother. Her wish was his command and he knew that how hurt she was with his refusal to believe her.
'It's about the truth Di. I'll always be with you but Khushi's not capable of this. Give her a chance to explain.' Arnav said kneeling down in front of her, taking her hand in his to assure her that he was still there for her.
'This is your attraction talking.' Anjali said shoving Arnav's hands away.
'No, this is my belief on the woman I love talking.' Arnav had never wanted his confession to go like this. He chanced a look at Khushi whose eyes had widened with disbelief. Her tears had stopped and her eyes drooped down before swaying only to fall into his arms when he had rushed to catch her in a quick reflex just like he always did.
'CHOTTEY!' Even Anjali's scream had not been able to stop Arnav from gathering Khushi in his arms.
'It's true. Just like the truth that Khushi can never do something like this.' Arnav said with a finality in his tone, putting an end to the drama and squeezed Khushi's shoulder who kept looking at him in bewilderment.
'STOP IT! I swear Arnav if she stays here one more minute, I'll do something to myself.' Ignoring the burn in his heart at hearing his Di call him by his name, he was about to retort when Anjali shifted her attention towards Khushi and yelled. 'GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!'
'Very well then.' Saying that, Arnav picked Khushi in his arms and walked out of Shantivan.
