Who Am I?
Who Am I
"Who am I?" They asked confusedly as their teacher Miss Daniella looked at them.
"What do you mean dear child?" Their teacher asked softly.
"Ma'am, every single form for any competition has either male or female. And I am always confused about what is my gender. Even those identity cards call me a female but I never feel it. I never feel myself to be a female. Who am I truly Ms Daniella?" The young child looked up to his teacher who now had a twinkle in her eyes as she questioned them, "My dear have you ever heard about the LGBTQ+ Community?"
"I have heard homosexuals, transgenders and bisexuals are LGBTQ+. Am I right?" They questioned.
"Yes, child but not fully. My dear the LGBTQ+ Community isn't that small. It is a very vast community with many people of different viewpoints on their identity and sexuality."
"But how does that even connect to me? I have heard of the community but how does it relate to me?" The young child asked.
"What does Q mean in the abbreviation?" The teacher tried to prompt her student.
"Queer, though I don't know what it means, unlike other terms." They said agitatedly.
"Queer, in general, is a collective word for the whole community. But the Q also has another meaning. It means Questioning."
"Questioning? What does that mean Ma'am?" The student asked curiously as they looked up towards their teacher.
"Questioning are those people who are still not sure about their sexuality or gender or both. They are not sure about any label to it. They are still in the process of identifying it." Miss Daniella explained to them patiently. "Just like me?" They asked eagerly.
"Maybe yes child. You say you aren't sure about how you feel. You don't feel you are a female even though that's what your identity cards identify you as." "But won't that makes me different and strange?" The young student asked in a slightly low voice.
"Why my child? Why will it make you strange?" Miss Daniella asked kindly. "Because I am confused about it while others in my class know what their gender is. They aren't confused like me." They whimpered.
"No child! You tell me this some people like roses, some people like daisies but some are there who are confused about which they like. So when those people are confused do you call them strange? No right? In the same way just because others know what they feel is their gender it doesn't mean you are strange. You are different but each and every person is. Remember this child, just because you are questioning your identity doesn't mean you are any different from others. Because in the end, we all are humans. And that itself makes us all same."
"Thank you, Ma'am, thank you so much! I wouldn't have taken it well if you weren't with me. But can I ask you something?"
"Yes, go ahead." She prompted.
"How do you know so much about the community? Do you know someone?" The child eagerly asked.
Miss Daniella chuckled as she replied, "I know this all because I myself am of the community. I once was called Daniel."
