Chapter - 1
In the Darjeeling, among the oak and autumn trees, the children were chirpily playing in the beautiful morning, as the birds were roaming and flying here and there. They were running fast and were playing blindfold game with their friends. An old lady in her last fifties was looking them when a smile adored her lips, awfully. A girl in her mid-twenties called her from the back all due respect, “Sister Martha! Someone has came”
“Who?”, frowned Sister Martha as she was forgotten in the charm of the little ones that it was a Sunday, and one among them was going away from her.
The girl smiled, “I think you’re forgetting, today is Sunday”, and smiled vanished from her lips, so as Sister Martha’s.
She sighed and looked again at the children, “We might be unhappy due to – due to our separation with them, but the other side of coins…”, stopped she and continued looking into the children, “it is for their well, for their future”, at which the girl nodded.
“Let’s go, Mansi!”, Sister Martha strongly go ahead at which nodded Mansi.
A couple in their early thirties were waiting for the head of the orphanage, Little Angel’s , Sister Martha and left their chairs when she arrived with Mansi.
“Please be seated Mr and Mrs?”, asked Mansi.
“Ghosh! Mr. and Mrs. Ghosh!”, the couple introduced themselves and the restless lady immediately announced, “We are here to adopt an orphan”
“Orphan? Are you literally here to adopt an orphan”,sarcastically asked Sister Martha.
The lady realized her fault and apologized, “sorry! Adopt a child”
Mansi said, “Please fill this form”, and Sister Martha eyed her to take the children as per the form. The couple wanted a girl child, a newborn. But the orphanage has none, so they agreed on a child of the age of 4 to 5.
“Please take the girls”, said Sister Martha and nodded Mansi as per her orders.
The children were playing blindfold when the little girl Anya, who has damn caught her sign language teacher, wearing a plain suit, having long hair and a beautiful smile with doe shaped eyes. The teacher opened the blindfold and clapped for the mute little girl, Anya.
The teacher indicated her with her fingers, hands and eyes,“you were superb dear, I love you”
The little girl jumped with her antics which forced the teacher to laugh happily, the children as usual were so happy with their sign language teacher when Mansi arrived and said something to the teacher which shrunk her smile but she again smiled broadly and indicated, “Come, your parents are here”
The girls weren’t happy, but the teacher made them happy explaining that this is the best opportunity to leave a beautiful life, especially with the parents. There were only three girls of the age of 4 to 5 and both the Mansi and the teacher took them to the Sister Martha’s cabin.
Mr. and Mrs. Ghosh, first looked at the girls and found Anya cute and beautiful, Mrs Ghosh came closer to the little girl and asked her name but she couldn’t answer being a mute, so on her behalf the teacher replied,“Anya! Her name is Anya”
“I didn’t ask you, she can also speak”, retorted the rude lady back at which the smile shrunk from the little angel’s face and she nodded negatively as she wanted to say, “that I cant”
The couple in a second understood the meaning of her no and the lady took her steps back, “sorry! I don’t want to adopt a mute”
“So! We wouldn’t allow to adopt any child”, immediately retorted the teacher at which Sister Martha scolded, “Prerna!”
“I am sorry sister, but the lady, who distinguishes the child with her ability, could be a good mother. I really don’t think so”,Prerna took the fact in front of the head with which she agreed but the Ghosh’s became angry, “We even don’t want any orphan from here”
“Thank you that is why you don’t deserve to be parents”,sheepishly replied Prerna and Mansi tried to stop her to not argue but Prerna being Prerna, kept arguing.
Mr. Ghosh sarcastically argued, “And what about you, are you mother? You aren’t even married, seems to be alone in the world, just like the child”, the tears filled in the eyes of Prerna and with the sour throat said she, “if you aren’t in my shoes, don’t judge”, and tears rolled down her cheeks when she ran from there and the couple too exit.
Sister Martha too understood her feelings and silently asked Mansi about the reason which she didn’t replied and left too, to console her best friend.
The clouds were roaring like wild lion, exactly that it was the same night when he left Basu Badi, the same time someone, touched her shoulder and it shrugged her as if the person has took her out from the memory-lane with a jolt. Her face was pale yellow unlike the black sky but the lady shrugged her, Sister Martha called her “priyu”, and immediately Prerna embrace her in a tight hug and called, “Maa”
Sister caressed her back and the crying Prerna, just like the heavy lightening on the sky’s shoulder kept calling her “Maa! I have child, a husband but still I am alone, why maa? Why?”, thought she was having conversation with Veena, but when she realized the reality, she immediately wiped her tears and tried to look here and there, so she can hide her tears from the warden of the teachers-cum-head of the orphanage.
She smiled fake, “sorry! Wo hawa tej hai to kuch aankh mein chala gaya tha”, and lied white, which couldn’t remained hidden from sister,“don’t lie! I know what has happened three months back, after all, I am the only person who knows the reality of that night, the reality of your quirked fate”
Prerna shut her eyes tightly and with chocked throat said,“Shayad aap nahi hoti to main zinda nahi hoti”
“Main nahi hoti to koi aur hota, it was written by Jesus, that you get a new life”, she cupped her cheek and Prerna’s mind took her to two months back, when she was draping her wedding dress and the little Kukie ran to her room, ordering to wear this jewelry and not the other one, and she too obeyed her as always.
Prerna was looking adorable indicated the not more mute Kukkie, and smiled broadly when the same time Rishab Bajaj entered to bid good bye, “I have to leave, Prerna. But I will never ever forget the love and affection you gave to us.”,
Kukkie kissed her mother’s cheek and bid a good bye, “Bye”,and Prerna too kissed her back saying bye, looking at Rishab. He left Kukkie to leave with maasi and when they left, “Kukkie will miss you, even I will”, said Rishab as unexpected by Prerna.
He gave her a rolled paper tied with a golden ribbon and insisted to open it when he left. When he left the Basu Badi, the storm echoed and rain started heavily, she looked here and there closed the windows and opened the unopened letter.
“Dear Prerna, main jaanta hoon ke aapko kabhi meri zaroorat nahi padhegi, but the universe works in mysterious ways… I just wanted to say, agar aapko kabhi bhi meri zaroorat padhe, aap yaad rakhiyega main humesha aapke saath hoon. Humesha!”
Highest intentions
Mr, Bajaj
She finished reading the letter touched it with her heart and the same time Anurag shrugged her off, the letter flew somewhere in the air and the rain started even more heavily.
Prerna wanted to stop Mr. Bajaj and Kukkie, only god knows why, but she too wanted to inform Anurag about their child, and she did the same as if she get the time or not. With the heavy rain Rishab and his family too left, forever alike a cold breeze.
Anurag looked at her and tried to flirt, “One cannot help, but fall in love with you”.
Prerna too arched the brow and grinned, “Can’t you compliment directly”
He helped her wearing the necklace when she confessed, “I am pregnant”, a glow was on her face but his smile vanished and he said, “How?”,the same time when she wanted him to feel the baby.
Her smile vanished, taking it as a joke and again smiled, “What do you mean how?”, and mocked. But he was serious, he shrugged her hand and said, “Firstly I was married to Komolika, then you were married to Bajaj, how can you get married? And when?”
This rooted her to the ground, as if earth was not beneath her feet, the person to whom she believed the most didn’t believe her truth and the same time Mohini making her eyes big with all her wrath came inside the room and slapped her tightly, and Anurag not even objected.
She held her hand tightly and dragged Prerna outside the room and threw her on the floor, near whom Veena and Shivani came but Mohini didn’t stopped here, “How dare you to impose an illegal child on my aunu”
“Maa!”, Tapur and Nivedita objected her and Shivani intervened, “Kaki ma ye bakwas hai?”
“Bakwas nahi, sach bol rahi hoon main, it might be Bajaj’sor someone else’ child to whom your sister wanted to name as Basu”, the tears were rolling down from Prerna’s eyes, she ran to Mohini and begged, “Nahi thisis not the truth, ye Anurag…”, but before she could complete Veena slapped her own daughter and alleged, “Don’t lie. Everyone knows, Anurag wasn’t with you since four months”
Prerna was stunned and she has no proof of her truth, she looked at Moloy and Nivedita, “Kaka Babu, I am not lying”, the disabled Moloy understood her but couldn’t help her. Her only hope was Anurag, she ran to him,who didn’t hear a single word, she begged umpteenth times but he didn’t.
He shrugged her off and looked back, and this was enough for her to lose the battle of truth and fate, the same time Mohini dragged her and threw her out of the Basu Badi, not even Veena accepted her. The rain was heavy as if the skies were crying with her in her pain and she dragged herself off on the wet black muddy road, crying with the skies and when she knelt down on the road, a heavy vehicle hit her, she rolled down and touching her womb in the order to save her child, she fainted.
She was on the road for how long, only god knows, her body was bleeding heavily when the same time person of god, Sister Martha’s eyes fell on her and she called the ambulance.
