Chapter 3
CHAPTER 2
The D3 gang was back. After overcoming all the differences, unresolved issues and insecurities, they were even tighter than before. And throwing Kria in the mix, things couldn't have been more better. Sure, things were not going to be easy, but reflecting back honestly, things had never been easy at St. Louis. The D3 gang had to fight their way out of everything to keep afloat their passion for dance and their right to pursue it. And it definitely helped that the one thing the students of St.Louis or popularly referred to as Louisians' had learned was to never give up. After all, if the sworn age-old enmity between Dazzlers and Weaklings could be dissolved; anything could happen.
Leading the way with this very thought was Kria. Having missed dancing for over a year, it wouldn't be wrong to assume that she was the most eager to prove her mettle. And who could blame her? It was a known secret that Kria was a passionate dancer and keeping her away from dance was equivalent to keeping a child away from his favourite toy. True, she had been performing in the college almost immediately following her return, but she hadn't done anything on a competitive level. Plus with Rey by her side, both on a personal front and professionally, she knew sky was the limit. And the moment a chance came their way in the form of a local championship, she couldn't wait to start.
Rey could see that Kria was over exerting herself. Not only was their couple performance a highly technical number, but her individual score was no mean feat as well. Kria was known for pushing the boundaries and she normally got away with it, but this time Rey could feel in his bones.. something wasn't right.
It turned out, Rey wasn't wrong after all. A week before the championships were due, the entire gang was in the rehearsal hall. Some were discussing costumes, some editing the final mix of their songs. All in all, nobody expected that a disaster was waiting just round the corner. Kria was rehearsing her routine, putting some finishing touches here and there, when in a flash, she lost her footing mid-pirouette and hit the floor with a resounding crash
Everything came to standstill. And then there was mayhem everywhere.
"Kria!!"
"Damn! Kria! Tum thik ho?"
"Khade kya ho?get the car! Ise hospital le jaana padega! "
"Sambhal ke! Uske knees ko move mat hone dena "
All throughout, Rey remained numb. He didn't remember the journey to the hospital, couldn't remember how Kria was rushed into the casualty, didn't remember what the doctor said after he examined her. Nothing. It was as if he was not there. As if he was watching this from a third person's view, detached and unmoved.
"She has torn her anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and her medial meniscus" said the doctor. " In simple words, her knee is bashed up pretty badly. So far, we have controlled the swelling and pain and have immobilized the knee, but she will have to undergo a few more x-rays and MRI so that we can assess the level of damage. Depending on that we will be able to decide the course of surgery. But let me warn you all, depending on the extent of damage and her rehabilitation later, chances are her recovery might never be 100%"
There was a stunned silence following the doctor's words. True, he never said it out loud that Kria could never dance. But he as good as told them all, that she might never be able to dance like before.
And that, according to Rey was a subtle but irrefutable PROFESSIONAL DEATH SENTENCE.
