As the countdown begins for Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par, the superstar finds himself locked in a battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). With just days to go before the theatrical release, reports suggest that the CBFC has asked for two cuts in the film. However, Aamir is unwilling to compromise on his vision and is reportedly planning to meet the board personally to defend the film in its original form.
Directed by RS Prasanna and featuring Genelia D'Souza alongside specially-abled actors, Sitaare Zameen Par carries a strong emotional and social message. The film aims to highlight the abilities and dreams of differently-abled children, much like the spirit of Aamir’s earlier classic Taare Zameen Par, but with a different storyline and a more inclusive lens.
According to a source quoted in Bollywood Hungama, the actor-producer believes the film has been made with sensitivity and deep thought, and any cuts could dilute its message. Aamir is expected to meet the CBFC Examining Committee on Monday in a final attempt to avoid the edits. Until the certification is granted, the team has been unable to open advance bookings, something they’re hoping to change as soon as June 16.
Interestingly, Sitaare Zameen Par has already cleared the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) with a 12A certificate. The BBFC noted that the movie includes "discrimination and moderate sex references," and has a total runtime of 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Earlier, the team was reportedly considering a limited release. However, following strong interest from distributors and exhibitors, the film will now see a wide release across India, aiming for maximum reach and impact.
The trailer of Sitaare Zameen Par has already struck a chord with viewers for its uplifting tone, heartfelt performances, and inclusive casting. With Aamir Khan sticking to his convictions, all eyes are now on the CBFC’s final decision.
