Veteran actor, filmmaker and television pioneer Dheeraj Kumar passed away on Sunday at the age of 79 in Mumbai. The respected industry figure had been undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital for pneumonia and was reportedly on ventilator support in the final days of his life. His family and team had earlier requested privacy, confirming that he was under close medical supervision and in critical condition.

Dheeraj Kumar's passing marks the end of a remarkable journey that spanned over five decades in Indian entertainment. Beginning his career in 1965 after being one of the top finalists in a talent contest alongside Rajesh Khanna and Subhash Ghai, Kumar soon carved his own path in Hindi and Punjabi cinema.

During the 1970s and 80s, he became a familiar face on the silver screen, known for his strong supporting roles in classics like Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Kranti, Swami and Heera Panna. One of the most memorable moments from his film career was the song “Ka Karoon Sajani, Aaye Na Balam” from Swami, picturised on him. Between 1970 and 1984, he also led 21 Punjabi films, establishing himself as a prominent name in regional cinema.

Later, Dheeraj transitioned into television production, where he made an equally powerful impact. As the founder and head of Creative Eye Limited, he brought devotional and mythological stories to life for Indian households. Hit shows like Om Namah Shivay, Shree Ganesh, Jai Santoshi Maa, and Jap Tap Vrat became staples on Indian television. His production house also explored contemporary storytelling with shows like Ishq Subhan Allah, which received acclaim for its refreshing themes.

A spiritual soul, Dheeraj Kumar had recently attended the inauguration of the ISKCON temple in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, where he expressed gratitude for the divine and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support of Sanatan Dharma. Fans and members of the industry are now waiting for an official statement from the family. His legacy, both on screen and behind the scenes, will continue to inspire generations to come.
