Tumbbad's Re-Release Beats Star-Studded Films to Top 2024 Charts

2024 has turned into a year of re-releases for Indian cinema, with several old films returning to theatres. Movies by superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Chiranjeevi, and Vijay were among the re-releases that garnered attention. Surprisingly, the top performer among them wasn’t one of these big-budget hits but a small horror film, Tumbbad. Despite lacking a star-studded cast, this ?5 crore cult classic surpassed the collections of much bigger films upon its re-release.

Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Tumbbad initially released in 2017 with Sohum Shah in the lead. It was praised for its unique storytelling and eerie visuals but earned just ?15 crore back then. In its 2024 re-release, the film added ?38 crore to its lifetime earnings, beating notable films like Rockstar (?10.50 crore) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (?2.50 crore). Even Chiranjeevi’s hit Indra made only ?3.20 crore, and Vijay’s Ghilli, though successful with ?26 crore, trailed Tumbbad.

The ticket sales data shared by Filmy View on Saturday revealed Tumbbad sold 10.25 lakh tickets, making it the most-watched re-release of the year. In comparison, Rockstar sold 3 lakh tickets, while Kal Ho Naa Ho managed 1 lakh. Tamil hits like Gabbar Singh and Murari sold 2.10 lakh and 2.58 lakh tickets, respectively, but fell short of Tumbbad’s phenomenal footfall.

Vinayak, played by Sohum Shah, sets out to uncover a cursed treasure in the eerie village of Tumbbad. This gripping narrative, coupled with haunting visuals, helped the film find a loyal fanbase over time.

Initially, Tumbbad struggled at the box office but gained a cult following post its streaming debut. Its massive 2024 re-release success has now led to its sequel being announced.

With over a dozen Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu films re-released this year, Tumbbad stands out as a shining example of a film that defied expectations, proving that great content always wins.
