Bollywood is known for its happy love stories filled with songs, dances and happy endings. With valentine's day just a day away, it is appropriate that we have a countdown of Bollywood cinema's finest love stories.

The 10th stop goes to: Veer Zaara

A love story of how a man is willing to sacrifice his life and spend 22 years in prison to protect his Pakistani love. And on the other end,  she sacrifices her life and lives in his village while cherishing his memories. Veer Zaara starred Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji. Without a doubt, this movie was one of the greatest hits and won several awards.

In 9th place: Kabhi Kabhi

A romantic story spanning across 2 generation of lovers forced to marry against their will due to family feud. This Yash raj classic is brought to life with an all- star cast starring Amitabh Bachchan, Waheeda Rehman, Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Neetu Singh.

In 8th place: Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

A romantic flick starring Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherji and Salman Khan, this film was a huge hit. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a story about friendship and love between 3 college students. A film filled with wonderful songs and Shah Rukh- Kajol's sizzling chemistry makes this a must-watch film!

In 7th place: Bobby

The movie is a compelling love story about two teenagers- Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia falling in love. The movie's soundtrack proved to be the best. Afterall, who can forget the song "Hum tum ek kamere mein band ho"

In 6th place: Awara

Awara is a story about two lovers seperated at childhood due to certain circumstances. Later on in their lives, they re-unite coincidencely . It's a beautiful story enacted very well by talented actors such as Raj Kapoor and Nargis. An old but timeless classic cannot be forgotten in our list.

In 5th place: Maine Pyar Kiya

A romantic film about friendship that turns into love. However, the father stands in the way their union but eventually, the hero wins gets love. The film created a superstar of today and gave bollywood cinema a standardised script for years to come. Without a second though, Bhagyashree and Salman Khan steal the show, making the movie worth watching.

In 4th place: Kagaz Ke Phool

A commercial disaster this film may be, but it is definitely one of Hindi cinema's finest films and a Guru Dutt classic. An unraveling tale about the love between a self-absorbed director and a beautiful actress. An intricately told story with enough nuances to be appreciated only through multiple viewings. This venture stars Guru Dutt and Waheda Rahman and it is definitely a film to marvel at.

In 3rd place: Devdas

Well forgetting the new version,  the original story  of Devdas is certainly a classic. Sure it does not have a happy ending, but its definitely a very romantic film with wonderful dialogues and screenplay. The original Devdas stars  Dilip Kumar as Devdas, Suchitra Sen as Paro and Vyjantimala as Chandramukhi definitely makes our list.

In 2nd place: Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

This film needs no introduction at all. Shahrukh Khan and Kajol make a wonderful pair in this film. DDLJ won several awards and celebrated 600 weeks of continuously running in Mumbai cinemas in April of 2007. Beautiful screenplay, wonderful songs and good direction got this film international recognition. Afterall it is one of the only 2 Hindi films listed in '1001 movies you must see before you die'.

Well, the 1st place goes to epic movie: Mughal-E-Azam

Mughal-e-Azam was a  compelling movie that it was re-released after being edited. The film is now available in both B&W and colour. Directed by the perfectionist, K.Asif Mughal-e-Azam starred the great Pritviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. The movie took 10 years to be shot and broke all box-office records. It is the love story between a prince and a court-dancer, Anarkali. Words cannot describe the beauty of the film. One has to watch it to realise how utterly romantic this film is. Definitely numero uno.
