'Spiderman: Into The Spider-Verse' Sequel Gets Production Underway Ahead of 2022 Release

Production is finally underway for Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Into The Verse 2 as lead animator Nick Kondo confirmed the same on Twitter.Last month, Sony announced the movie was pushing back from its original April 2022 release plan and is now dated for October 7, 2022.

The original was a critical and commercial success, grossing $190M domestic and $375M globally.

Details of the sequel have been kept largely under wraps. Shameik Moore is expected to return, among other cast members. Joaquim Dos Santos is directing and Dave Callaham is scripting.

Back then, Plans for an animated Spider-Man film by Lord and Christopher Miller were leaked in 2014 and announced in April 2015. Persichetti, Ramsey, and Rothman joined over the next two years, with Moore and Schreiber cast in April 2017. Lord and Miller wanted the film to have a unique style, combining computer animation with traditional hand-drawn comic book techniques inspired by the work of Miles Morales co-creator Sara Pichelli. The film required up to 140 animators, the largest crew used by Sony Pictures Animation on a feature film. The film was dedicated to the memories of the creators of Spider-Man, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who both died in 2018.
