Saand Ki Aankh Movie Review: A subtle attempt to propagate feminism with righteous role models!

The film that entertains you with social messages if ought to be worth your time and considering Chandro and Prakashi Tomar’s skill; the film might hit the bull’s eye and encourage many others as well…

Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar

Saand Ki Aankh is a biopic that narrates the story of India’s highly talented and commendable Dadi’s who trained themselves to be expert sharpshooters! The film gives a rough idea of Chandro Tomar (Bhumi Pednekar) and Prakashi Tomar's (Taapsee Pannu) life and the way they achieved the title of Revolver Dadi.

Note: Please do not get any wrong ideas about feminism from this film.

Due to some undiscussed reasons, biopics in Bollywood fail to present the authenticity and the richness of factual events that took place in real life. ‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication,’ but Bollywood repeatedly fails to understand the importance of this phrase and treat the audience with a visual illustration that might expand the audience’s view and understand the motive behind the narrative. We are in love with the idea of adding songs to each and every sequence of the film and amidst all the chaos created by songs the trajectory of the story shifts drastically.

No wonder songs are important for the film but, there’s a huge difference between adding background score and the full-fledged three-minute song.

Despite Saand Ki Aankh being a biopic, the makers decide to alter the storyline. For once why don’t Bollywood directors work according to the ethical parameters of filmmaking and present the audience with a clean and unadulterated storyline? For example the clarification of the color of their Ghungat.

However, the film has overshadowed pros compared to cons and thanks to the filmmakers, they could add subtlety to the feminist propagation in the film. Apart from that, the film is equally entertaining.

In order to understand the justification of this argument, we first need to shed light upon Revolver Dadi’s life. The two have practically given away their whole life for their children and it is really difficult to start from ground zero. No matter what, their paths were destined to connect the hardships that of most women rural India.

Now, considering the issues they have faced, adding a feminist angle to the story definitely adds a magical charm to the film. But, that’s not the only highlight of the film; director Tushar Hiranandani has added feminism with utmost elegance that you can hardly observe amidst all the chaos.

The uncertainty that was injected amongst Bollywood fraternity was a totally controversial and sensitive topic, however, Bhumi and Taapsee have done justice to the characters they performed. In comparison to Taapsee, Bhumi’s physique helped her perform this role quite gracefully, but the only blunder you stumble upon repetitively is the prosthetics used to put forth the character’s looks. The two proved to be a wise choice throughout the film.

Apart from them, Prakash Jha has carried his composure throughout the film and nowhere, you’d see him off the beat. The makers could have added more close-ups for his character, which could clarify his acting skills.

If you could understand the intensity of the story you might definitely connect with emotional sequences. The film only lacks on technicalities while portraying the realities of their story, rest assured.
