Rohit Sharma Bids Adieu to Test Cricket After Shock Ouster as Captain Ahead of England Tour

Selectors drop Rohit Sharma as Test captain; veteran opener announces retirement, marking end of a pivotal era in red-ball cricket.

In a dramatic turn of events for Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. The decision came shortly after reports surfaced suggesting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors had decided to relieve him of Test captaincy duties ahead of the England tour.

The 38-year-old opener, widely regarded as one of India’s finest stroke-makers, ends his red-ball career with a tally of 4301 runs in 67 Tests. His record includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, accumulated at an average of 40.57. Rohit's second innings in Test cricket truly took off after he was promoted to open the batting in 2019, and he quickly cemented his place as a dependable mainstay in the Indian lineup.

Rohit Sharma took to his Instagram and personally announced his retirement, quoting, "Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format." However, his leadership tenure has been a mix of highs and lows. While he captained India to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) against Australia, the team also suffered disappointing losses in back-to-back series—first against New Zealand at home, and then in the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under.

According to a report by The Indian Express, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel held a series of meetings—most recently in Mumbai—to chart a new course for India’s red-ball future. After evaluating Rohit’s recent form and the team’s overall performance, the selectors reportedly informed senior BCCI officials of their decision to move forward with a younger leadership group.

“The selectors’ thought process is clear. They want a new leader for the England tour and Rohit doesn’t fit in as a captain, especially considering his red-ball form. They want to groom a young leader for the next Test cycle,” a source close to the selection committee was quoted as saying.

Declining Form and Unsettled Role

Rohit's decline in Test form over the past year has been a growing concern. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, he managed just 31 runs across five innings, averaging a dismal 6.20. His earlier series against New Zealand at home also yielded poor results, with an average of only 15.16.

Adding to the confusion was his erratic presence in the playing XI. He missed the first Test in Perth due to the birth of his child, but on his return, his batting positions varied widely. Initially, he chose to bat lower down the order, then returned to open in Melbourne, only to unexpectedly drop himself from the Sydney Test. Such decisions created instability within the squad and raised questions about his tactical judgment as a leader.

The Future of India's Test Captaincy

With Rohit stepping down, attention now turns to who will take over the Test captaincy. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is the frontrunner, having already led the team in the Perth Test. While Bumrah’s leadership qualities have been widely praised, his history of injuries and the need for workload management make his appointment as full-time skipper a complex decision.

Other strong contenders include KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill. Rahul is the only one among them with prior Test captaincy experience. Pant, currently recovering from injury, has already proved his mettle in high-pressure situations, including the historic win at the Gabba in 2021. Gill, on the other hand, continues to grow as a top-order batter and is seen as a long-term prospect.

End of an Era

Rohit’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian Test cricket. From being in and out of the squad in his early years to transforming himself into a reliable opener, Rohit's journey has been a tale of grit and resurgence. His elegance at the crease, especially in home conditions, made him a fan favourite, while his centuries in tough overseas conditions—like the Oval in 2021—proved his adaptability.

Though he exits the longest format, Rohit Sharma remains a vital part of India’s plans in white-ball cricket. He is expected to continue leading India in ODIs and possibly T20Is, where his experience will be key in shaping the next generation of players.

For now, Indian cricket looks ahead to a new era of Test leadership, while fans and players alike bid farewell to a true modern-day great of the red-ball game.
