Rohit Chandel, who won hearts as Dhawal in Pandya Store, is all set to make a comeback with a lead role in Sony TV's upcoming horror comedy Ami Dakini. After the show's conclusion, fans eagerly awaited his return to television, and now, he is back with an exciting new project. Currently shooting in Kolkata, Rohit opens up about his experience working with SVF Productions, exploring a new genre, and his role in Ami Dakini. While the official release date is yet to be announced, the buzz around this horror-comedy is already building.
In an exclusive chat with India Forums, Rohit shares insights about his journey, the show, and much more.
Can you tell us a little about your character in Ami Dakini?
I cannot reveal the character's name, but you can say that since it's a horror, this character will add the comedic punch. So, it's going to have the best dialogue, with comedy and strong punchlines coming through. It will be fun!
How different is it from Dhawal in Pandya Store?
So, it's totally different from Pandya Store. Pandya Store is a family-oriented drama series with romantic and more dramatic scenes. While this show also has family-oriented themes, it leans more towards horror and comedy. So, it will be fun to watch.
From family drama to horror-comedy, how challenging was this transition for you as an actor?
Yeah, it's challenging because I haven't done this genre before. It's about stepping out of my comfort zone and doing something which you haven't done before. I'm still preparing for the character. We have shot some scenes, but everyone has their eyes on me, so I have to give my best. I'm still working on it and figuring out how I can make the character stand out.
Balancing horror and comedy can be quite challenging. What kind of preparations did you adopt?
Talking about preparation, I am still working on it. I haven't reached 100% yet. So yeah, I am sure that I will continue preparing until a few episodes have aired because I am still figuring out the best way to shape this character.

Here’s a glimpse of Rohit and his upcoming show:

How has your experience working with SVF Production been?
This is the first time I'm shooting away from Mumbai, and SVF Production is one of the biggest production houses in Kolkata. They are very good, and I'm really happy working with them. It's something different—the technical aspects, the working style—everything is unique. So, it's a new learning experience for me with them.
Are you personally a fan of horror-comedy films or series? If yes, do you have a favourite?
No, because I had never seen a horror comedy before, but I watched Stree and really liked it. That day, I realized that it's something new in India. It worked well in film, but for a television audience, it's a different experience. We're still figuring out how to tackle it. Obviously, the audience will love the show, and as far as I know, after CID, this is the only fiction show as of now on Sony TV. So, yeah, the work is going well.
What do you think will resonate the most with the audience in this new genre for you?
I'm not sure if horror and comedy have been on television before or not. It's a new genre for the television audience as well. Since it's a television medium, I'm still figuring out how the audience will react to this genre. I'm curious about how it will go because I've experimented with historical shows, dramatic shows, and romantic shows. But this is my first time working on something like this, so I'm excited to see the results.

For the unversed, Sony TV has released the teaser for its upcoming horror-comedy Ami Dakini, promising an exciting mix of mystery and supernatural elements. Though the storyline is still a mystery, the teaser offers a spooky first look at the show. The teaser begins with the phrase "Aahat ke baad lot raha hai dar", suggesting a revival of the horror genre. The visuals show a disfigured bride with long, sharp nails holding a lantern in a dark room, as she sings Sabki Baraatein Aayi in the background. A suspenseful voiceover describes her as a "living corpse" searching for someone, adding to the mystery.
While Rohit Chandel has been confirmed, the rest of the cast has not been officially announced. However, reports suggest that two actresses will join him in the show.
