Rocky is the like the male Poo but updated - Karan Johar on the origin of Rocky Randhawa

If there is one character that has received unanimous love from all fronts, it is that of the leading man himself, Rocky Randhawa, played by Ranveer Singh. The character is one of the most entertaining yet deep ones that we have seen in a Bollywood film for the longest time. One might wonder though that just how did director Karan Johar come up with the characterisation of Rocky considering all these quirks.

In a full-length interview with Film Companion, Johar went on to open up on what was the origin of this character and how was it developed. Johar said how in the pandemic when he decided to put Takht on hold and write a love story, he used to spend a lot of time on Instagram. And it is there where he would see all these West Delhi influencers and content creators which would amuse him as they were just full-of-life, funny and joyous; that's where Rocky came from in essence. He then mentioned how Rocky is like male Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum but updated. 

He also said how he is also amused by the gym culture where some people just talk about that and hence he put in that as a trait to Rocky as well and he had to be a gym boy. But apart from all this, he wanted to make sure that he is golden-hearted and just innocent and lovable but never should he be annoying. This was made sure by the writers where the character, being so flamboyant and over-the-top can easily get annoying to watch and endure, where the line to this is a thin one. Johar concluded by saying that apart from the writers' efforts, it was Ranveer Singh's genius that made sure that the line was never crossed.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani grossed over 46 crores in the weekend.
