The long wait is finally over, as everyone's favourite and cult comedy show, Khichdi, made a long-awaited comeback to the television screen; to be precise after a sabbatical of 13 long years.

There was so much expectation, anticipation and wondering if the show will be able to live up to the legacy it has established over the years. Did it do so? lets find out..

What Is It About

The premise itself is so funny, that you instantly have a laugh at the first go. The Parekh family is still the same madcaps, but are living in a house, which has no walls and only doors. Basically, they were supposed to have a whole apartment re-developed, but the builder conned them and ran away.

This has led the Parekh family to have many enemies, who appear in a recurring manner. But, the beauty of Parekh family is sustained, where those who have come to blast on them, end up pulling their hair in rage to run away.

What follows is Hansa (Supriya Pathak) getting kidnapped by Madam Mavsekar (Renuka Shahane), who does so in order to get her money back from the Parekh family.

Before the episode ends, we are already treated with an amazing teaser of how the funny idiots are gearing up to loot a bank adopting disguise. And guess what? Babuji is dressed as a pineapple, Praful as Samosa and Hansa, apparently is Anarkali. Hold your laugh and don't ask!

The Good

There was not a single dull moment throughout the whole episode, and I can totally vouch for that. From frame 1 to the final frame, the moments, the jokes, the gags, the situations are rib-tickling and fabulously entertaining.

They makers here have not only maintained the flavour of the characters, but infact enhanced them brilliantly. The obvious concern for anyone here was a simple one - Will the show be able to live up to it's legacy or will it be a major disaster? I certainly think, they do not need to worry, as Khichdi has absolutely aced being vintage Khichdi, and if you are one who has seen the original Khichdi, Instant Khichdi and Khichdi - The Movie, you are in for yet another laughter riot.

Do I even need to mention how fantastic the actors were? These are seasoned veterans we are talking about here, and you do not, for even a moment feel they have lost the touch 'being Parekhs.' Anang Desai, J D Majethia, Supriya Pathak, Vandana Pathak and Rajeev Mehta are the same lovable and adorable stupid idiots which they were 16 years ago.

The real winner is the writing and the situations. The little detailing in a joke is at times so impactful, that you cannot help but laugh at it and appreciate the thinker of the same. For example, there is a moment, when Himanshu removes a bottle of what looks to be liquor and offers Babuji, as they stand in a cold area of Manali. Babuji gestures to not have it, and then Himanshu sniffs the bottle. It is only till the last moment, when you would have a big laugh, as that bottle of liquor actually contained chana. Such moments, as basic as they sound, are so silly yet funny.

The idea of cameos also seems a good one, where Renuka Shahane's stint of playing a stammering mafia was funny too. This promises us for better instances ahead.

The Not-So-Good

I would be lying, if I say, I found a single moment of anything being 'not-so-good' in the show. Everything, and I mean everything was genius comic madness. But, only to highlight, the kids who play Jackie and Chakki are unconvincing, but fortunately, are taken care of from the other actors in the frame.

The Verdict

It is very easy for a classic show to mess things up, when it returns after a hiatus, due to a bombardment of expectations and the need to adapt to the changing times. But, Khichdi does that with absolute perfection. Keeping the essence of vintage Khichdi alive, it has only got better. Your weekends seem perfectly sorted with tomfoolery, stupidity and unfiltered laughter.
