Bollywood icon Rekha made a rare appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, where she shared her thoughts on working in the 1979 blockbuster Suhaag, directed by Manmohan Desai. During the episode, a fan brought up the popular song O Sheronwali, featuring Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan, in which she performed dandiya in a temple setting.
The fan asked, “In the movie Suhaag, you played Dandiya so well. Even though you are a South Indian, you played the Gujarati Dhandiya so well. It didn’t feel like you were not a Gujarati. How did you manage it?"
Although Rekha refrained from mentioning Amitabh Bachchan by name, she offered high praise for him, saying, “Ye sochiye ke jinke saath main Dhandiya khel rahi thi, wo kya shaks hai. Acha nahi khelungi toh karungi? Dandiya aati ya na aati ho, saamna aise aadmi-shaqs aa jaata hai toh khud hi har angh angh theedakne lagta hai."
Suhaag remains a milestone in Indian cinema, emerging as the highest-grossing film of 1979, according to Box Office India. The ensemble cast included Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Amjad Khan, Nirupa Roy, Kader Khan, Ranjeet, and Jeevan.
Rekha appeared to enjoy herself thoroughly on the show. Krushna Abhishek and Sunil Grover, impersonating Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, performed a hilarious act that left Rekha in splits. Meanwhile, Kiku Sharda, dressed as Umrao Jaan, added to the entertainment. The actress also delighted the audience by singing and dancing with Krushna, who donned a costume resembling Amitabh Bachchan.
Rekha’s appearance brought back memories of her celebrated collaborations and reaffirmed her evergreen charm and iconic status in Indian cinema.
