It is official. Vishnu Vishal and Ramkumar are coming back with Ratsasan 2. It seems the shoot of the terrifying sequel will start from 2026. The duo took years to find and build a script that does justice to the legacy of the first film. When we talk about Indian thrillers movies or ones with the serial killer angle, Ratsasan is perched right on top with the best. The 2018 film has great repeat value, and offers a similar degree of thrill with every watch. It looks like Vishnu Vishal will be back as a cop in the movie going by the poster. As we celebrate the announcement, here’s a throwback to what made Ratsasan a cult classic.
Traditional Indian thriller movies made within the commercial format had slick template where we see a song in the first 15 minutes, for example, Gupt, Humraaz or the Race franchise. Within minutes a body is discovered, and the cops come in. We generally see a hero, a stunning heroine and a faceless mystery man. Ratsasan made a complete detour from this. Men walking their dogs come face-to-face with a decaying corpse immediately building an atmosphere of tension.
The hero of Ratsasan was also written in a unique manner. Vishnu Vishal played SI Arun Kumar forced to take up a cop’s job after foregoing his passion to become a film writer. Ratsasan showed how his passion fuelled by imagination helped him think beyond the conventional line of investigation. Vishnu Vishal was terrific. The scene where he finds out about the death of his niece haunted viewers hours after the movie got over.
On the technical front, Ratsasan was edited brilliantly by San Lokesh and GK Prasanna. Even though it had a romance angle of Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul, it did not dilute the suspense. The screenplay and story-telling was taut, with as much intensity as the nail-biting final overs of a closely contested match.
Lastly, a lot of credit for the success of Ratsasan should go to Saravanan who aced the role of the troubled, psychopathic villain to perfection. It was a performance people would discuss for years.
