Social media influencer Orhan Awatramani, better known as Orry, and seven others were arrested for allegedly drinking alcohol at a hotel in Katra, the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. The incident sparked widespread outrage, with political parties demanding strict action against the accused. The Jammu and Kashmir Police stated in an official statement that the eight individuals were booked for "violating the law of the land" and that their actions "hurt the sentiments of the people."
The arrest of Orry and his companions has sparked a debate about the consumption of alcohol in religious places. Some argue that the consumption of alcohol is a personal choice and should not be restricted, while others argue that it is disrespectful to the religious sentiments of the people. The incident has also raised questions about the enforcement of laws related to the consumption of alcohol in religious places.
Rakesh Wazir, President of the Hotel and Restaurant Association in Katra, emphasized the importance of maintaining the sanctity of Mata Vaishno Devi by strictly avoiding alcohol consumption in the region.
Even if it was consumed inside a hotel room, it goes against our values. As long as one is in Katra, such rules should be respected
- Rakesh Wazir
Wazir also highlighted that Katra follows strict guidelines regarding the pilgrimage site, traditionally avoiding not only alcohol but also food ingredients like garlic and onion in food preparation.
The controversy erupted after a police report was filed by Katra police on March 15, naming Awatramani and his companions-Darshan Singh, Parth Raina, Ritick Singh, Rashi Dutta, Rakshita Bhogal, Shagun Kohli, and Anastasila Arzamaskina. According to news reports, the group was discovered consuming alcohol at a hotel despite clear instructions that alcohol and non-vegetarian food are strictly forbidden in the region.
A special team was assembled under the supervision of senior officers, including the Katra Police Superintendent, the Katra Deputy Superintendent of Police, and the Katra Station House Officer, to ensure that those responsible faced consequences.
