Michael Jackson Fans Threatened Leaving Neverland 2 Director, Claims ‘Murderers’ Tried to Track Him

Dan Reed, the director of Leaving Neverland, made a documentary about Michael Jackson’s alleged involvement with two young boys at the height of his fame. However, this bold move put his life in danger.

In an interview with The Guardian, Reed revealed that he received several death threats after the documentary aired. He said, “I’ve had murderers try to find me. I’ve had people threaten to shoot me who are armed. I’ve been threatened many, many times.” Despite the backlash, Reed is moving forward with a sequel to his 2019 documentary, which was released on HBO. The first film featured Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who claimed they were abused by the Smooth Criminal singer when they were young.

At the time of its release, Leaving Neverland sparked major controversy. Jackson’s loyal fans accused Reed and the documentary’s subjects of making false claims for money, arguing that the singer could not defend himself as he was no longer alive. Reed shared more about the threats he faced. He said he had been around “violent” people before, but this time, it was different. People tried to track his home address and even planned to send him anonymous parcels, which he found alarming. However, he did not take online threats from other countries too seriously. “They’re going to have to get on a plane,” he said. Even with the dangers, Reed remains excited about the sequel and hopes it will reach more people.

The second part of Leaving Neverland will continue the story of Robson and Safechuck as they fight a legal battle against Michael Jackson’s estate. They want to hold the singer’s team responsible for what they claim happened to them. Leaving Neverland 2 will premiere on Channel 4 in the UK on March 18.
