Vicky Kaushal, is gearing up for his next venture, Sam Bahadur. The film marks a reunion with director Meghna Gulzar, who previously collaborated with the actor on Raazi. In a recent interview with Indian Express, Meghna Gulzar drew insightful comparisons between the two films, shedding light on the distinct narratives and characters they explore.
Meghna Gulzar emphasized the impact of "circumstances" and "perspectives" in shaping individuals, a theme central to both films. While Raazi delved into the life of Sehmat, an undercover Indian spy navigating complex relationships in Pakistan, Sam Bahadur explores the story of Sam Manekshaw, a prominent military figure in Indian history.
Highlighting the differences between the two narratives, Meghna Gulzar noted the shades of grey in Sehmat's character and the empathy she felt towards her. In contrast, Sam Bahadur presents a unique challenge as the film doesn't allow for villainizing characters. She stated, “With Sam (Manekshaw), there is no scope for villainising anybody. It’s not that story and he is not that man. He didn’t do it in his lifetime, and I can’t do it in his film.”
Meghna emphasized the essence of Sam Manekshaw's character, focusing on his unwavering dedication to defending the country without demonizing the enemy.
Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Sam Bahadur—also starring Sanya Malhotra and Fatima Sana Shaikh—celebrates Manekshaw’s courage. For Kaushal, it is one of those few roles that have left him transformed.
