Main Workaholic Hoon: Akshay Kumar

5th July is known as Workaholic Day and when speaking of people who love their work, how can we leave Khiladi Kumar behind?

5th July is known as Workaholic Day and when speaking of people who love their work, how can we leave Khiladi Kumar behind? That's right, the epitome of workaholic, Akshay Kumar is the Brand Ambassador for Workaholics Worldwide (if there ever was such a thing). While some actors are happy appearing in just one or two movies a year or doing just one or two ads a year, Kumar is known for setting the box office roaring at least once every quarter! Here's a look back at some of his most active years and the box office results.

The workaholic drive began in 1993 when Kumar appeared in five movies. Unfortunately, none of them did too well, though Kumar was appreciated for his role in all. 1994 set a world-record, at least according to BollyCurry, where eleven of Kumar-starrers released one after the other! Of these Yeh DillagiMohraMain Khiladi Tu Anari, and Suhaag were considered hits and helped establish Kumar as an action hero.

1997 was another successful year for Kumar withseven releases. His special romantic appearance in Dil Toh Pagal Hai and his comic roles in Mr and Mrs Khiladi and Aflatoon helped prove that he is an all-rounder and should not just be considered an action hero. After a spell of some hits and some two or three movie a years, Kumar hit another world-record spell in 2004 with the release of ten movies. While movies such as Khakee and Aan: Men at Work continued to fuel his action image, he also starred in movies like Mujhse Shaadi KarogiAitraaz, and Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo which again proved him as an all-rounded actor.

2005 was a divided year when out of the six movies Kumar starred in, two were declared hits, namely Waqt: The Race Against Time and Garam Masala, and the other four ranged from below average to flops. 2006 was a similar story with only Phir Hera Pheri and Bhagam Bhag doing well. 2007 was his first year of all successes when all four movies he starred in were declared hits. These were Namastey LondonHeyy BabyyBhool Bhulaiyaa, and Welcome. This success was short-lived, however, when for the following few years, most of Kumar's films failed to impress at the box office.

2012 saw Kumar breaking the spell with back-to-back hits in the form of Housefull 2Rowdy RathoreOMG - Oh My God!., and, to some extent, Khiladi 786. In 2013, he silenced his detractors once and for all with Special 26, a film that had a story, a meaning, and well-defined characters. He continued this success into 2014 with Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and then in 2015 with Baby and Gabbar is Back. 2015 will see the release of his highly-awaited film Brothers in August and Singh is Bling in October.

Kumar has always set the cash registers ringing at the box office with his masala movies. At the same time, he has been duly awarded for some of his best roles. He has won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role and IIFA Best Villain Award for Ajnabee (2001), the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role and IIFA Best Comedian Award for Garam Masala (2005), IIFA Best Comedian Award for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), IIFA Special Award from the host country Thailand in 2008, IIFA Star of the Decade Male in 2009, and the Padma Shri in 2009. In 2012, he was awarded the national prestige of being one of the 15 Olympic torch bearers in Toronto, Canada.

Workaholic Day is usually celebrated by giving the workaholics a day off and letting them relax, but BollyCurry knows that even on this relaxing day, our Workaholic Khiladi Kumar was busy either shooting or promoting or with his family. We salute the undying spirit of Akshay Kumar and may he continue to provide the Bollywood industry masterpieces and masala movies for many years to come.
