Kanika Dhillon blasts Jai Mummy Di writer for 'sexist, idiotic’ comments; Taapsee supports

‘Haseen Dillruba’ writer Kanika Dhillon reacts to ‘Jai Mummy Di’ writer Navjot Gulati’s comment as he implied that her name was highlighted in the trailer because she is married to Himanshu Sharma, a close ally of filmmaker Aanand L Rai.

The trailer of Haseen Dillruba starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, and Harshvardhan Rane released a few days ago. Besides the powerful performances, the trailer also stood out for highlighting the writer of the film Kanika Dhillon’s name in the trailer.

While this was lauded as a progressive move by some members of the industry, ‘Jai Mummy Di’ writer Navjot Gulati tweeted that the key to scoring a 'top billing as screenwriter' is to 'marry into the production house'. His tweet was in reference to Kanika, who recently tied the knot to Himanshu Sharma, a longtime creative partner of filmmaker Aanand L Rai, whose Colour Yellow Productions has produced the film Haseen Dillruba.

Navjot in his tweet had written, "If you want top billing as a Screenwriter in a trailer(something that should be the norm)You need to marry into the production house. Once the Writer becomes a family member, is treated like an Actor-Star. #Goals."

Kanika hit back at Navjot with a sharp response and slammed the writer as she tweeted:

"Hi @Navjotalive I am quite shocked by ur extremely SEXIST - MYSOGINIST and bordering on IDIOTIC comment Neither will I list down my body of work cos ur pea sized brain will not be able to process a successful woman making it on her own! U may hav a brain freeze! Have a good day."

In another tweet, she wrote:

"And mr @Navjotalive because of writers like YOU - who display their STUPIDITY on something tht should be Applauded as a welcome step by the writing fraternity- other very deserving writers do not get top Billing as is their right—- shame on u!"

Kanika received support from her ‘Haseen Dillruba’ actress Taapsee Pannu, who slammed Navjot by tweeting:

“A progressive call to credit a writer turned into a sexist rant by the age old misogyny of crediting a woman’s success to the house she marries in or the man she married. Your righteous call for equal credit can’t be overtaken by the bitterness in u."

Interesting controversy. Why don’t writers get the credit they deserve for movies and TV series? Without a wonderful writer penning the story, how exactly do Directors/Producers expect to create good content? You can have the best actors but without a good story, there is nothing. Irrespective of gender or family associations, writers should get more credit in every single movie. Hoping this controversy draws more attention towards this instead of making it a traditional tu tu main main scenario
