Is Ending an Iconic Show With a Bad Finale Actually Pre-Planned? Here is Why We Think That

We have umpteen instances about how some of the most iconic shows have had either blisteringly good or absolutely bad or polarizing finales to wrap their run. Unfortunately, though, recent history hasn't been too kind with good endings where arguably the biggest show of all time, Game of Thrones invited immense flak and negative reaction on its finale season and even more so on the final episode.

What's the one thing that ardent viewers absolutely wait for when it comes to the heading toward the culmination of an insanely popular show? The Finale. Take up any idiom, phrase or saying that reflects it, the same cannot be more evident with how all the sweat, hard work, intelligence and love that goes into making a show an iconic one is ultimately remembered by its finale.

Having seen my fair share of iconic shows over the years, the flak for Game of Thrones had me wondering if planning and pulling off a bad finale is actually intentional or more so, pre-planned? The reason I say this is taking into account the fact of having an absolute and unchangeable fate that a show has. To elaborate on it-

You Cannot Change It

One thing that's obvious about any finale is how it cannot be changed. Yes! That's right. Good or bad or lukewarm, what's done is done and nothing can be done about it no matter what the reactions of the finale have been. Take Game of Thrones, How I Met Your Mother or even Seinfeld, these shows may have had amongst the worst finales ever but apart from being remembered for having a bad finale, nothing else changed for the show.

Doesn't Exactly Tarnish The Legacy

The only one negative aspect that a bad finale brings into play usually is the debate if an iconic show will remain iconic owing to the polarizing responses and probably tarnish the legacy - that hasn't been the case at all. Take a show like Seinfeld for instance, the show continues to be remembered for being one of the best sitcoms of all time and how the show was made from 'nothing.' In spite of having a rather pathetic finale, the show's legacy has only grown over the years and nothing has changed that. In fact, millennials continued to be drawn to it in spite of knowing about the finale.

Pre-planned? Not Cared About? Intentional?

I wonder if the absolution of the show and the finale is what has drawn the makers to, in fact, pre-plan or intentionally make the finale a polarizing one. This comes into conversation especially related to how Game of Thrones ended, where the makers built amazing plot-points over the years and seasons but, for some reason, decided to rush end it and leave unanswered questions with the last season.

For other shows like How I Met Your Mother and Dexter, the end was more about just purely being hated with hai the story was ended and not about not completing a story per se.

The Finale and Its Fate

So, the unfortunate yet perplexing thing about a finale is - love it, hate it, don't quite like it - you cannot change it. An iconic show will remain iconic in spite of whatever the finale is and while the sheet hype of a finale is always huge, things don't quite change owing to it. So, you might as well just enjoy the run of a show and not care too much about the finale. For we know, the makers are intentionally making a polarizing finale to throw the viewers off guard.

Agree with the article. 'Starsky and Hutch' also had a disappointing final episode.
