Hindi Diwas: I have a deep love for Hindi, says Farnaz Shetty

Actress Farnaz Shetty says that while her work requires her to speak in English most of the time, she loves Hindi as well. She says that she has read many Hindi books and has a good command over it.

“The reason behind us starting with English is that nowadays we are deeply involved in social platforms and social networking platforms. English serves as a connecting point, making it easier for everyone to understand what is being said, and it transcends geographical limitations. That is one point. Another reason is the prevalence of English in corporate companies. English is essential because the official language for documents is typically English, and there is a lot of international business and related exchanges. In these contexts, English is crucial, and as we become more accustomed to the language, we keep improving,” she says.

She adds, “We can't simply speak any language fluently without practice. Speaking about Hindi, it's our first language in the industry, and while I primarily speak English due to my social circle and education in a Convent school, I have a deep love for Hindi. I read many Hindi books and have a strong command of both Hindi and Urdu. My friends are sometimes surprised by how well I speak Hindi, given my background in mythological and historical shows. I also read numerous Hindi books on my Kindle. People often stereotype Hindi-speaking individuals as outdated, but I don't believe that's the case. If we can speak Hindi well, there's no language as beautiful and expressive as Hindi.”

She says that some people might feel that they would be looked down upon if they speak in Hindi, but she doesn’t feel so. “Some people, especially those who travel abroad, might perceive speaking in Hindi as old-fashioned, but I don't share that view. I believe that we should have command over multiple languages. I am also connected to the Telugu industry, so I am trying to learn a new language as well. To me, every language has its unique essence, and it's heartwarming to hear someone speaking Hindi when you travel abroad; it creates a sense of connection. However, I don't understand why some people in our own country shy away from speaking in Hindi. At times, people attempt to point out mistakes when someone is speaking in English, which is insensitive. It's an individual's choice, and one should not feel ashamed regardless of the language they choose to communicate in,” she says.
