Harry Potter reboot begins filming as HBO introduces Dominic McLaughlin as the next boy wizard

HBO Max has officially kicked off production on its much-anticipated Harry Potter reboot. On Monday, the streaming platform unveiled the first look of actor Dominic McLaughlin, who will be stepping into the shoes of Harry Potter—a role that became globally recognisable through Daniel Radcliffe in the original films.

In the newly shared image, Dominic is seen wearing the classic Hogwarts uniform, complete with Harry’s signature round glasses. He poses on set beside a clapboard, symbolising the start of filming. The caption on HBO’s official post read, “First-years, step forward. The HBO Original Harry Potter series is now in production.”

The casting of Dominic as Harry has naturally sparked conversations online. Several fans offered encouraging messages in the comments section. One user wrote, “He looks great as Harry!” Another added, “Good luck little Harry. Please protect him from all the haters.” Some were cautiously optimistic, with one fan saying, “Just do your best, little Harry!” Another comment read, “DAMN, he actually looks like Harry. The new series will feature a fresh cast for all the central characters. Alastair Stout has been cast as Ron Weasley, while Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger. Supporting roles include John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Professor McGonagall, Janet McTeer as Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

J.K. Rowling, the author of the original books, is closely involved with the project as an executive producer. She confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that she has read the first two scripts and called them “SO, SO, SO GOOD!” indicating her creative input remains strong in this new adaptation.

Despite the buzz, HBO has not yet revealed the official release date for the series. For now, the first look has set the tone, and all eyes are on how this reboot will reintroduce the magical world to a new generation.
