New Year has already dawned and the country is all set to take off with the first festival of the year, Makar Sankranti. What do we say about this? It is not a festival that is celebrated in a single manner all throughout India as the festival is diverse in different states. In Punjab, it is celebrated as Lohri while in Maharashtra it is Sankranti, in Tamil Nadu it is Pongal and it goes on.

Well, what we do not miss during the festival is the colorful kites and the til ke laddoo that are made and enjoyed by all equally.

We caught up with some of our telly stars about their Sankranti memories with sweets and kites and they had really interesting stuffs to say.

Himmanshoo A malhotraHimmanshoo Malhotra: Sankranti is a beautiful festival and I used to fly kites when I was a kid. But in Delhi, kites are mostly flown on the Independence Day rather than Sankrati. But flying kites have always been fun and it used to be a competition among relatives and friends when we get together.  For us Lohri is a big day during this season and we are used to doing Bhangra on the day which is really great fun, and being with the family and relatives is another heaven. But this year I guess I will be shooting on the day of Sankranti.

Suhasi Goradia from Yahan Mein Ghar Ghar Kheli wishing Happy DiwaliSuhasi Dhami: Makar Sankranti for me has always been Til ka sweet, in the receiving end. We used to make the chikki at home and that's the one thing I like to have. I used to fly kites when I was a kid but that too with the khirki in hand because I don't know why but I just couldn't fly the kite. The festival has always been a fun time with family and this time I am going to Gujarat during the festival.

Kinshuk Mahajan: These days, Sankranti has only been shooting and work. But earlier, the days were fun with kite flying with friends and relatives at home. Our elders used to say that this is one of the best days to do offerings for the needy and I make it a point to do that in every possible manner. During Sankranti we used have beach festivals where we used to go and fly kites and I have seen a lot of weird shaped kites very huge in their sizes. But this year I think I would be shooting on the day but I would like to wish everyone a Happy Sankranti and I would ask them to offer something for the needy in their possible ways.

Ankita Sharma: Sankranti for me is Ghee Shakkar which I love to eat a lot and when mom comes to give it, we all just fall for it. I used to be in the team of kite flying but used to just take a backseat with the Khirki in hand. I remember seeing a very huge black kite that was made in the shape of a  dragon and somehow I felt really struck for a second. I remember making kites at school because during Sankranti, we used to have crafts projects at school.

Jai Kumar Nair: I used have great fun with my friends during Sankranti wherein we used to go to the ground in Goregaon and fly kites. I miss those things these days as I do not have time at all and I am completely tied up with work. We do make kites and I remember seeing different models of kites like fish and I sometimes I get stunned because I wonder how they manage to even fly that as it needs really good balance and wind. Another main thing in Sankranti is the Thil ka laddoo and also gud ka sweets.

Perneet ChauhanPerneet Chauhan: Lohri is important for us during Sankranti and it is the day when we put the bonfire and walk around. Usually married girls and early mothers would do the rituals. The story behind this is interesting. Goes like this; there was a dacoit called Dulla Bhatti who used to help the needy with his stolen particulars . He also rescued the Hindu girls who were forcibly taken to be sold in slave market. Though a bandit, he was the hero of people. His name is mentioned in all the Lohr songs. Flying kites is also another fun activity though I cannot fly them. I think the last time I tried flying a kite was when I went to Panchgini for a shoot for Star One Horror Nights.

TellyBuzz wishes all our readers a very Happy Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal..
