A formal complaint has been filed against 27 prominent figures in the Indian entertainment industry, accusing them of promoting illegal betting applications. The complaint, filed on March 19, 2025, by businessman Phanindra Sarma with the Telangana Police, names actors Vijay Deverakonda, Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, Manchu Lakshmi, Pranitha, and Nidhhi Agerwal, alongside a host of popular social media influencers.
The complaint alleges that these celebrities, through various pop-up advertisements, endorsed apps like A23, Junglee Rummy, Yolo 247, Fairplay, and Jeet Win, all of which operate outside the legal framework of India's Public Gambling Act of 1867. The accused have been charged under several sections of the Bharat Nyay Sanhita, the Indian Penal Code.
Sarma contends that these promotions have contributed to a moral decline among young people, leading to severe financial difficulties and societal problems. The complaint highlights the growing trend of celebrities endorsing illegal apps, raising concerns about the lack of accountability and the potential harm inflicted on vulnerable individuals.
While the legal battle unfolds, the actors involved continue with their respective projects. Vijay Deverakonda is set to star in the action-packed "Kingdom," directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, scheduled for release on May 30, 2025. Rana Daggubati, known for his role in "Vettaiyan," will next appear in "Rana Naidu Season 2" and is expected to star alongside Dulquer Salmaan in "Kaantha."
This case underscores the complex relationship between celebrity endorsements, online gambling, and societal well-being. As the investigation progresses, the public will be closely watching to see how the legal system addresses the issue of celebrities promoting illegal activities and the potential consequences for both the accused and the vulnerable individuals impacted by their actions.
