The London residence of legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, Garden Lodge, has been put on the market for the first time since the musician’s time there. The Kensington property, valued at £30 million (US$38 million), was bequeathed to Mercury’s former fiancée and close friend, Mary Austin, after his passing.
Almost 30 years after inheriting the home, Austin has decided to sell the property, which she describes as “the most glorious memory box, because it has such love and warmth in every room.” Speaking about her time at Garden Lodge, she said, “I have had many wonderful memories here.”
Reflecting on her connection with the house, Austin shared that it still takes her back to the moment she and Mercury first visited it. She called it “a place of peace” and described it as an artist’s haven, adding, “Now is the time to entrust that sense of peace to the next person.”
Garden Lodge was designed by Mercury to reflect his vibrant personality and serve as a showcase for his extensive art and antique collections. According to Mansion Global, most of these pieces were sold at auction last year.
Born Farrokh Bulsara, Freddie Mercury rose to global fame as the lead singer of Queen, one of the most celebrated rock bands of the 1970s. Mercury passed away in 1991 due to complications from AIDS, leaving behind a legacy of timeless music and an iconic residence that has now come full circle.
