An array of new shows is lined up for the viewers. One of the most unique shows in the pipeline is Colors’ show ‘Nima Denzongpa’. The show revolves around a North Eastern girl shifting her base to Mumbai for her love and the struggles she has to face as people subject her to racisms.

India Forums got in touch with Surabhi Das who plays the titular role in the show. Talking about doing such a relatable character, Surbhi said, “I feel I’m the chosen one by God to spread awareness on such a sensitive topic. Every person from Northeast India who travels out of that place in pursuit of their dreams goes through the discrimination and name-calling. I’ve also faced the same and I’m glad that I’ve got a platform from which I can spread this important message and also tell the people that Northeast Indian also has a heart and get affected with the labels that people have been giving them since ages. I remember when I was in Delhi, a few friends would call me ‘Chinki’ or ‘Momo’. I was quite young at that point in time and didn't understand much about the same but with this show, I’ll be the voice of many people from Northeast India”.

We asked her if she feels responsibility on her shoulder and feel pressurized, the actress said, “I believe that I’m doing it for my family. Northeast India is my family and if you take up a task for your family, you don’t feel pressurized. Rather, I’m more convicted and compassionate to make a point and to make sure that my performance leaves a positive change. If the show manages to change even one mind, I will feel like my hardwork is paid”.

Talking about the hypocritic mentality of the Indians, Surabhi said, “In order to get the acceptance from the country and the government, a Northeast Indian has to win a gold medal in Olympics or do something extremely extra ordinary to prove their nationality. If one manages to do the same, they are called as ‘Bharat Ki Beti’ or ‘Bharat Ka Beta’ and if you’re a normal individual with an ordinary job profile, you’ll be called as ‘Chinky’ or ‘Momo’ which is totally wrong. Having said that, the mindset of people is slowly and steadily changing and I hope with ‘Nima Denzongpa’, the change occurs rapidly”.

When asked about her reaction on bagging the show, Surabhi quipped, “Honestly, I felt that it’s a prank call. I mean, moving to Mumbai to try my luck in showbiz industry was a dream but it was quite a distant one. Everything happened very quickly. I got a call for an audition and I simply send them that and I was not really expecting things to happen this quickly. Merely in a week’s time, I was here in Mumbai from Assam to be the lead face of a renowned channel like Colors’. Frankly, it’s still sinking in and at times it feels like a dream”.

Its true that NE people face racism but we have to look into a broader prospective, not everyone thinks it as racism. As a kid when I used to see NE people, which is very rare - my first assumption was they were foreigners probably Chinese enjoying the country - I have never asked them nor insulted them have made few friends actually in train travels, one who I am in contact for the past 10yrs - one is from Sikkim & other from Meghalaya. btw! this racism isn't subjected to just NE even southerners face it - they are called Madrasi irrespective of which state they belong to & many make fun of it too. Person who doesn't belong to TN hate it, when people call them Madrasi - Madras was a state over 70yrs ago just collection of 3 states, telugu people hate it being called Madrasi, so do Kannadigas, Malayalis. When you goto south - they call Hindi waala, only Sardars are referred to as Punjabis.
