With BollyCurry celebrating empowerment of women in Bollywood, courtesy of Women's Day falling in March, we present to you those female singers who've lent their voice since the origin of the music industry, and whose songs are still a treasure in our hearts.
This is the first name that comes to mind when we speak of the magic of Indian singers. One of the most sought out voice and fondly known as the 'Nightingale of India'; Lata ji is a legendary singer in Indian history, with a voice as soothing as a lullaby and a career spanning over six and a half decades. Some of her songs include "Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna", "Luka Chupi", "Resham Ki Dori", and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham".
Asha Bhonsle
No one can forget the lady who's voice has an edge of peppiness to it. Singing runs in Bhonsle's genes after followed her sister's Lata Mangeshkar, foot-steps, but with her own dynamic twist. Along with the innumerable songs she's sung, she has also been an active part of some musical reality shows, gracing the judging panel. A few of her songs include 'O Hasina Zulfo Wali', 'Kambakht Ishq', 'Le Gayi Le Gayi', 'Keh Doon Tumhe', etc.
Sadhna Sargam
With a voice immersed with the classical touch, Sargam has been a consistent singer for some of the softest songs the Indian Film Industry has heard. Her most remembered songs are 'Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye', 'Na Kajre Ki Dhaar', 'Pehla Nasha', 'Aao Na', 'Har Kisiko Nahi Milta' and many more.
Alka Yagnik
She is one of those rare few who has sweetness flowing out of their tunes. The romantic genre is her forte as she can shower a song full of love and passion with a smooth click of her vocal cords. A few of her commonly hummed songs are 'Ek Din Aap', 'Kuch Toh Hua Hai'. 'Suraj Hua Madham', 'Bakhuda Tumhi Ho'.
Alisha Chinai
No one can forget the cute looking 'Made In India' girl, who's song is a favorite of almost everyone even till today. Her appearance gives away the nature of her song, the tint of naughtiness but only so visible. She blended the Indian music with her touch of pop and a hint of Western mixes. Songs such as "Kajra Re", "Bebo", "Tinka Tinka" and "Aaj Ki Raat" have been given her mesmerizing voice.
Usha Uthup
Apart from romantic songs, there are other genres that keep the music industry going. One of them consists of vibrant and beating-worthy music, which you just cant resist but tap your feet to it involuntarily. Uthup is such a singer whose voice could bring life into any morose scenario. "Darling", "Doston Se Pyar Kiya", "Hai Ye Maya" are some of her hit numbers.
Falguni Pathak
Diversity is one of India's best features which resulted in Bollywood graciously welcoming the sweet Gujju singer, Falguni. Innocence splashed all over her face and in the listener's view, she was an immediate hit. Her songs had a traditional hint and pleased audiences of all ages. She is best known for "Maine Payal Hai Chankayi", "Pal Pal Teri Yaad Sataye", "Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi" and many other songs.
Kavita Krishnamurthy
Another classical singer, her gentle voice creates an ambiance that immediately enchants everyone. She has the quality of versatility which credits her for some of the varied songs of the industry. "Chand Chupa Badal Mein", "Who Ladki Hai Kahan", "Kay Sera Sera" and "Dola Re Dola" are an example of her extraordinary talent.
